A 21-year-old man was caught in possession of 98 protected birds in a private residence in Safi. The stuffed birds were not registered as required by law, the police said.
The Administrative Law Enforcement (ALE) unit and officials from the Malta Environment and Planning Authority were called to the scene by the Birżebbuġa district police that made the find.
On site they also discovered materials used in the process of stuffing birds for display. Police investigations are ongoing.
Birdlife Malta welcomed the find: "We appreciate the efforts of the police. The ALE has been doing a sterling job in spite of their extremely limited human resources.
"At the same time it is imperative that the efforts of the police are also reflected in court - these criminals should be given the utmost penalty," it said.
