On January 14, Xagħra Primary school hoisted the Green Flag for the first time. The prestigious award by Ekoskola was awarded to the school after years of hard work by students and teachers.

Xagħra Primary is the first school in Gozo to receive the award.

To mark the occasion a programme was held in the school hall, which consisted of a short play and songs about the environment, followed by the planting of an olive tree in the school yard.

Xagħra archpriest Carmelo Refalo blessed the flag and the certificate, which was displayed by head of school Joe Rapa.

An Ekoskola delegation headed by Paul Pace (Ekoskola national co-ordinator) and Anton Portelli, Gozo College education officer, operations, attended the function.

For the next two years the school can hoist the flag, display it during school functions and in the foyer and use the Ekoskola logo on the school's letterhead and other school material.
