It is rather sad to read that the Labour Party's declaration of intent to present a parliamentary motion condemning the proposed extension of St John's Museum has produced a direct rebuttal from the PN and Mgr Philip Calleja.

A pause for reflection may have been more appropriate.

Mgr. Calleja may be correct in arguing that tourists' visits to the Co-Cathedral would inevitably be more convenient were the extension to be physically joined onto the cathedral itself, but I fail to see how that justifies the iniquitous plan to disturb the Knights' graveyard within the cathedral's precincts.

There has been a conspicuous silence on the part of the proposal's (very few) backers on this issue. It seems incredible to me that anyone with a sense of the immense historical and cultural significance (never mind the ethical doubts created by disturbing consecrated ground) of the graveyard could ever contemplate such a destructive plan.

I am somewhat disappointed by the PN's response as this now risks being turned into a political issue, and we all know what may happen then.

Someone in authority needs to grasp the nettle and return the entire project to the drawing board. Several excellent proposals by organisations such as FAA merit serious consideration before the diggers are sent in to begin the destruction.
