The GWU has written to the Prime Minister asking to be kept informed about developments at ST Microelectronics.
The request was made following media reports of talks between the government and the company about the future of the ST plant in Malta.
GWU General Secretary Tony Zarb said the workers and the union were concerned that they were being left in the dark about the future of the company.
Mr Zarb said that in terms of EU directives, the workers had a right to be informed and consulted.
The ST group said earlier today that some 4,500 jobs would be slashed worldwide this year in view of mounting losses. No reference was made to Malta.
The union said it is seeking meetings with Dr Gonzi and the company to discuss ways to ensure that ST stays in Malta and jobs are safeguarded.
