UHM rejoins calls for tariffs revision, GRTU to meet Resources Authority
The UHM this afternoon urged the government to revise the utility tariffs downwards as soon as possible and to retain the eco-reduction scheme.
The UHM - which like the CMTU had reached agreement with the government on the tariffs last November - said in a statement that the oil price had now stabilised itself as a low level. It was true that Enemalta did not buy crude but fuel oil and gas oil (PLATTS MED), but prices generally reflected the price of crude, the union said.
The UHM said it was confident that the agreement reached between the Prime Minister and the trade unions last November had eased the burden of energy prices on consumers and encouraged the people not to waste.
The union also called for more clarity in billing by Enemalta and the WSC.
Meanwhile, the GRTU, which has contested the tariffs in court, is to have a meeting with the Malta Resources Authority on Monday.
The meeting will come three days after the MRA has a meeting with the trade unions on the same subject.
GRTU Director-General Vince Farrugia said that the social partners urged the government to immediately reduce the tariffs during an MCESD meeting today.
Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said a downward revision is expected in March. (see video clip above)

So Bencini was right..I
wonder what WIlliam Portelli is saying...I mean...he does head a confederation of unions....albeit a diminishing one.
It seems that the real confederation is visible in another scenario...and that the UHM had to change their stance for fear of isolation, and due to pressure from their members.
As for Noel Barry....You don't write in Capital letters, and you write in English seeing that its an English newspaper.....
Your lingo would do really well in a political club, but here...well...lets admit it....it only makes you look like a fool.

Absolutely shocking!! This country lives a daily farce. Now we have a Statement from Gejtu Vella of UHM insisting with the Government to lower the Water and Electricity tariffs. I couldn't believe my eyes when I read the newspapers this morning. MUT was kicked out by CMTU whose main affiliate is UHM just because MUT and other ten Unions demanded clarifications and objected to parts of the Document the Government had sent to all the Unions following a meeting with the Prime Minister. Gejtu Vella immediately declared that he approved the Tariffs followed by William Portelli of CMTU. What is William Porteli going to say now? Is he going to apologize to John Bencini and his Union. The MUT has shown what a consistent and serious Union it is. Iz-zejn tela f'wicc l-ilma. Shame on UHM and CMTU.

To all who cannot understand the UHM stand. The so called 11 unions are demanding that the tariffs are lowered from 1 October though they know that at that time until now we are consuming oil bought at 100 dollars a barrel. So what they want is that consumed electricity be subsidized and GOVT have to introduce new taxes. What the UHM is saying is now that Govt will be buying oil at reduced prices and as said by the Govt, the tariffs be reduced so that merchants will not keep rising prices. The UHM is also insisting that the eco reduction scheme be kept in place. It is a joke talking about u-turn because u-turn were made when the so called 11 unions were refusing to go to the MRA(regulator) and instead meet with the PM and suddenly they went to the REGULATOR and is known that they are going again.

Proof please!!!!!!!
Out of 20 families (and the list grows) with a various number of members the bills showed only a slight increase of 18% to 20% which is very minimal.
Can you prove otherwise????

@Noel Barry: Int veru ferhan sew ghax qed thallas kontijiet oghla, aktar taxxi, prezzijiet oghla, etc. Ghandek gvern li vvutajtlu int qed jidhak bik kuljum u int tibqa ferhan. Nippreferi ma nkunx 'ferhan' bhalek ta.
Finally UHM put away it's partisan beliefs and came back on the right track defending it's memebrs and the citizens at large. Let's face it, the utility tariffs saga is the biggest blunder done by this confused, directionless government. The tariffs shouldn't have gone up in the first place especially when we are faced by a global economic crisis. And what beats me most is that we are paying higher tariffs and taxis, and the GonziPN says that they are enforced for the sake of the environment. Pull the other one please!! And Agostino Gatt buys a Jaguar from our taxes...very environmentally friendly. What a farce of government.

It is better for you to stay quiet and apologise to Mr Bencini of the MUT he deserves it and retreat everything ever.
You should learn for sure what is coherence and consistency because you lack of both !

From a little calculation I have made, it seems that only the dead agree with the Government that there is no need to cut down the water and electricity tariffs/prices/taxes.
The only inversion in this situation is that the dead do not have a vote; unless we return to the sixties.

How come the UHM is now saying that the utility tariffs must go down! Didn't the UHM and CMTU agree with these tariffs?! Is this a U-Turn or what? Perhaps the pressure of the 11 unions on the government is bearing fruit, after all, and now the UHM is in a state of panic. How opportunistic can they be!! But I am sure the people at large know who has their real interest at heart...certainly not the UHM and CMTU!!

Its always better late than never Gejt!. But for the people, why is the government waiting till March? Is he taking us for idiots? He should do it retrospectively just as he did when he increased it. This is pure institutionalized stealing. Its not right. you and I know it, and the government knows it.

It didn't succeed once, it's taking another try again, It's easy join the opposing tribe and lead to a glorious failure!. What impressive though is that it's so in your face, yet I believe for majority many folks within the UHM are genuine believers in the cause, it's those only onto on which I'm questioning their, ahem, their handlers agendas.

The facts are now showing the honesty and the loyalty to the Maltese population on the stand the 11 unions took against the electricicty and water tariffs. The facts are surfacing and the people can now judge our stand and actions.

What a laugh!!!
Is this the maturity that the fathers of the Government Clerical Union instilled in the union leaders? Or is that the present puppets have been assured that their government is considering (actually it has no other alternative) of lowering the taxes (tariffs are imposed only on imports) on water and electricity? It is well planned, because soon we will be having Carnival floats on which they can all show their faces in their true colours.
