The numer of tourists opting for package tours decreased by 13 percent . The largest proportion of tourists (465,128) were aged between 25 and 44 but the biggest increase was in the 0-24 age group, which grew by 16 percent to 219,241 visitors.

I WANTED TO COME TO MALTA FOR CHISTMAS/NEW YEAR, BUT DIDN'T DUE TO EXCESSIVELY HIGH FARES BEING CHARGED!
I DID ACTUALLY POP OVER FOR 10 DAYS IN JANUARY (THE AIR MALTA PLANE GOING BACK WAS ONE THIRD EMPTY!, NO DOUBT DUE TO HIGH FARES STILL BEING CHARGED).

It takes some nerve for a Minister to brag that last year tourism arrival figures were yet another success story just because they were somewhat better than the previous year. What he didn't say was that (a) 2007 had been a disaster year, and (b) that what really matters, i.e. tourist expenditure, actually went down.

The title should read "Income from tourism down 1.6% in 2008." The 3.8% is irrelevant. I'm sure income is much more important than the number of tourists per se.
It's like having a shop visited by thousands and no one spends a penny.
