Grant scheme for energy saving equipment announced
The government this afternoon announced a grant scheme to encourage the use of alternative sources of energy for domestic purposes, as announced in the budget.
The scheme applies for solar water heaters, photovoltaic panels, insulation and double glazing.
Retailers are to register their business by applying on www.mra.org.mt. They are also to register their products.
Applications under the scheme have to be made before purchase on an application form which can also be downloaded from www.mra.org.mt. An offer letter will then be issued, and the purchase has to be made within four months.
€2 million have been allocated for the scheme with applicants able to receive up to two thirds of the purchase price of a solar water heater for a maximum of €460. It is estimated that 4,600 families will benefit.
Applications will be received from February 16 and the scheme will be open for a year.
Those who install systems before February 15 may apply for assistance by May 15. This does not apply for those who insalled double glazing. More details are available on the Government Gazette number 18,372.

Maybe the government should pay up on the schemes they already have before promising new ones I am still waiting for refunds for my A+ washing machine and fridge applied for over 4 months ago !

@Gerard Cassar.
It's called simple Maths. If budget = X, and maximum entitlement is Y, then you can safely work out that X divided by Y will benefit, hence the estimate of beneficiaries. The number cannot be exact though as you cannot assume all families will request the full amount.

During and soon after the budget, Dr. Gonzi appealed the public to buy solar and buy it NOW. That's what we did. We installed a system 10 days ago. Now we are not entitled for the benefit. And with the probable decrease in tariffs next March, our system will take even longer to be cost effective. Thank you very much.
My advice...never listen to politicians.

I've had a Solar Water Heater installed on the 20th January 2009. Keeping in mind from last November's budget stating that 460 Euro will be rebated by the government.....what does parliment conclude???? That only those Solar Water Heaters installed after the 16th February 2009 will benefit the full 460 Euro. Contacting my installer, I was informed that I will only benefit 230 Euro. If this is not highway robbery...then what is ????

FYI, I don't have a low opinion of the Maltese - being a Maltese living in the UK, I think that we Maltese are far better than the British (contrary to what many Maltese people think).
If you think that I'm not an eco-friendly person, let me inform you that I commute to work on foot every day - be it sunny, raining, windy, or any kind of weather. This, rather than using a car (which I don't even own since I decided I didn't want to drive anymore), use a bus (as they make me ill), or train. How do you commute to work? Do you use a bicycle at least by any chance? My Co2 emissions are much lower than yours most probably.
What I meant is that people should stop arguing about not getting a grant for something they have done without considering the environment. Doing it from now onwards will only make consumers do double glazing if the cost less grant is cheaper than the cost to purchase other types.

Yes, you could be right. But that's the whole point. By initiating this scheme, the government is attempting to eradicate such an idea and introduce the real purpose of double glazing.

Quote " It is estimated that 4,600 families will benefit". How was this number reached. Are there profets or the beneficiaries have already been selected. And if there area lot more than 4600?

rather than asking for rebates on work already done,we should concentrate on getting these forthcoming bills electricity/water bills reduced to a fair level.

I have not only already installed PVC apertures with double glazing with the aim to save energy, but insulated all the exterior walls of my 3 storey house (except for the facade) which I've recently almost built from scratch. These are only 2 measures which I've undertaken to save energy, not to mention the shading of the apertures, a new fully-insulated roof (bejt) and pipe-lugging. If I did all this for the sake of getting a meagre govt rebate or for any other purpose, then the exorbitant costs I've footed are simply madness.
This to demonstrate that indeed there are Maltese people who think eco-friendly! You have a very low opinion of the Maltese my friend and, you also have so much to learn in the first place!

To everyone complaining about double glazing
It was common in the past few years to put double glazing in the houses not as a practice to save energy, but to reduce (or rather eliminate) noise pollution. I honestly don't agree that the govt should be subsidising double glazing to anyone installing them as no person living in Malta does it with the interest of saving energy.

I can't believe what I'm reading. Are these correspondent's serious?. These schemes are meant for those that otherwise would not be able to afford these commodities. You can't seriously expect Government to compensate you,or can you?. We do go from the sublime to the ridiculous at times.

Three years ago, I had all of my house done with double glazed windows. It's nice to know that this is being appreciated but not compensated for as will be those that were lazy or ignorant and will be doing it now. There's a lesson here somewhere to be learnt.

Kif dejjem teqirdu imma?
You are not being penalised. (you are not being fined or anything).
Incentive. Scheme. Get solar panels. Get PVs. Insulate. You can still benefit.

@E. Azzopardi
What do expect? That the government pays all the people who have double-glazing windows? What's next, giving stipends to every person who has ever gone to university?

So, I already have double glazing. So where do I stand? According to this, nowhere.
Penalized for thinking ahead. I am not surprised though.
