Nine persons were investigated by the police over the past week in connection with drug abuse.

The individuals, who included a Russian woman aged 27 and a Maltese woman aged 20, were held during various raids by the police Drugs Squad in different localities, including various residences.

The police said the most recent arrests were made on Wednesday after the squad had been surveilling the residence of a 33-year-old man in Msida after they were alerted about the possibility of drug trafficking. The police said that when they searched the residence they found heroin and cannabis resin and other items associated with drugs The police also confiscated cash and some mobile phones.

The 33-year-old man was arraigned yesterday and more persons are expected to be charged in court in the coming days, the police said.

During an earlier raid at Bugibba, a suspect tried to escape from the police and was observed throwing away a capsule which allegedly contained cocaine. He was arrested on the spot.
