Convicted murderer to appeal
Norbert Schembri, the man jailed for life for stabbing to death his former girlfriend and the mother of his daughter, will be appealing his sentence.
Contacted yesterday, defence lawyer Joe Brincat said he is in the process of preparing a lengthy appeal, which he expected to file on Monday.
He said there are a number of points he will be dealing with but could not elaborate yesterday.
Mr Schembri shocked the courtroom on Thursday when, after sentencing, he turned to the victim's family and told them: "I'm still alive, I'm still alive".
Following the 8-1 guilty verdict, Mr Justice Joseph Galea Debono sentenced Mr Schembri to life imprisonment, which, unless it is reduced on appeal, effectively means he will not leave prison alive.
In handing down sentence, Mr Justice Galea Debono pointed out that just eight days before the murder took place, Mr Schembri's probation, imposed in another case, had been extended, despite the evidence of a probation officer who said the accused had tested positive for cocaine and had been threatening his former girlfriend.
The four-day trial saw evidence accumulate against him day by day as neighbours who witnessed the crime testified.
The only female juror was excused and left the trial after pictures of the victim's slashed body shown to the jury were too much for her to stomach.

This is outrageously disgusting. It is his right to do so. But how on earth could he have the dignity to do it? I'm still alive; and he appeals. This is crazy stuff!
I truly hope that Courts keep him locked up as should minimally be!
As regards to comments re: Jury, i believe that even though I am amazed that he has not been unamously voted guilthy, I still do not agree with comments saying that the Jury system should be removed. The jury system provides society a further fair measure to judicial independence.

I agree 100% with you. The jury should be professionally trained just like the advocates.

he should have gotten life times the number of wounds he caused to that poor woman - and even that would not be enough. who needs this kind of person running around in our streets?what about the victims family and the poor child who witnessed this horrible act?don't they have a right to live without that fear?the courts should'nt even accept to receive the appeal. And what was the juror who voted against thinking? would he/she have thought the same if it was one of their family in those pictures?

Vengeance is not justice; but where is justice for the victim when there is not the slightest remorse by the assailant. Do we want a Charles Bronson justice style?
It is so difficult for the majority of a civilized society to pronounce the death penalty for most of us we dare not go against the Lord Command yet here we are fighting against evil. During Roman rule people were sent to the gully and others sold as slaves, yet we give these murderers good lodgings keep them healthy, show them TV, they can read books and take visits. From one extreme to another, the question is how we can balance the grade of a crime by punishment. Yesterday in Belgium, another murderer knocked on the door of a child care center and slaughtered his way in, already they are reporting he is a sick man. How hard it is to keep forgiving evil persons their killings of innocent victims. This is why the justice system must be harsh with certain crimes, no outside prison work, no TV, no books to read, no talking with others. The MPs must also
Lobby in the E.U. to up date the punishment .

If the appeal is won the judge should pass a sentence whereby the condemned is allowed to leave prison one day before he dies.

He must be joking !!!!!!!!! In cases like this, I wish we have the electric chair - cause he needs it and deserves it.

Like every other prisoner Mr Schembti has the right to appeal.HOWEVER, neither I nor any other decent citizen is willing to pay 1Euro cent in expenses, including that of the majistrate, court paperwork etc.
Having said that, I have no idea on what basis he's appealing. Hope it's not because he gave 'just' four severe stabs

How does the phrase go..."lock him in and throw away the key...."? Let's brace ourselves for the clutch of goody-goody apologists who still campaign for providing convicted criminals with swim pool facilities, a billiards hall, a gymnasium, a cinema, blah, blah, blah! Under Muslim Sharia rule, convicted murderers are left to the wiles of a chosen relative who will decide on the best method to mete out a death sentence. Any eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth may not exactly be the epitome of democracy and civilisation - but it sure helps!

This is no news as it is pretty obvious once he was given the maximum of punishment when the jury declared that he is almost 12% innocent (a guilty verdict of 8 votes to 1 and therefore not unanimous)
Can anyone tell me what this person had to do more then what he effectively did to the victim to get a unanimous declaration from the jury as guilty. I am convinced that the case was taken for granted and then the jury had being found unfit for the job or else they were afraid to act accordingly during a case of such extreme cruelty.
For this reason I am convinced that something have to be done and we must create a pool of persons trained as jury or we must change the system completely and abolish the trial by Jury from our Criminal Justice System.

At the cost of sounding barbaric; I would actually have preferred to have the accused sentenced to death by hanging. Sure, capital punishment is not a deterrent (never was) and it achieves nothing for society apart from revenge. But sometimes, revenge is good enough.

Hope that courts see sense and rejects the appeal. The only suitable place for this man is jail for life. No parole system can ever reform him.He must pay his debt to society

It just goes to show that Norbert Schembri's words to the victim's family were just an attempt to terrorise them further and in reality the prison sentence shocked him too. Justice has been done.

Hope justice will prevail and this monster will be locked up forever and ever.

Hopefully the Court of Appeal will take into consideration the words he told the victim's family and sentence him accordingly!!
