Coventry deal to sell Mifsud off as striker fails to agree terms

Michael Mifsud's contract with Coventry expires in June.

Michael Mifsud's contract with Coventry expires in June.

Coventry City had agreed a fee with an unnamed club for Michael Mifsud but the deal fell through after the Malta striker, who is out of contract in the summer, could not agree personal terms, the Coventry Telegraph reported yesterday.

The newspaper said that Chris Coleman, the Coventry City manager, had revealed that the club had missed out on another opportunity to cash in on the 27-year-old.

Derby County are the latest club to be linked with Mifsud with reports suggesting they had tabled a bid of £200,000 for his services. However, Coleman dismissed the report and scoffed at the figure, saying: "That might buy one leg!"

City were on the verge of selling Mifsud last summer when they reportedly agreed a £1.5 million fee with Bristol City but the deal collapsed at the last minute.

A few weeks ago, Reading were reported to have made an approach for the former Lillestrom striker but the club made no official comment on such rumours.

Sources close to the player told The Times that there has been significant interest in Mifsud from English clubs as well as foreign ones but no deal has been signed.

Given that Mifsud will able to leave Coventry for nothing next summer, he is unlikely to press for a move this month unless he receives an offer that meets his expectations.

Mifsud scored Coventry City's winner in the 2-1 defeat of Blackpool last Saturday.
