Woodware sacks 30 employees
Woodware Ltd has sacked 30 of its 40 employees, the General Workers' Union said.
The union said the company dismissed the workers after losing its biggest client in the UK and had to reduce production by 70 per cent.
The GWU is seeing how it could assist the dismissed workers.

Go on Gonzi. Continue playing your games of 'keeping up appearances'.

I am one of the thirty. I am 59 years old and at this age no one will offer you an employment.
Why should I not be entitled to get an early retirement scheme similar to the Dry Docks employees. We are in the same National Insurance. The N.I. should have the same policy with all those who have been paying under the same conditions. If we were equal to the paying side we must be equal on the receiving side.
The government should stop using to weights and two measures. What’s good for the goose it’s good for the gander. The National Insurance started the pension scheme at the age of 56 with the Dry Docks employees. We should get the same because we are citizens of the same category

Unfortunately this is just the beginning.
We have to face reality.
Thousands will lose their job in the next few months.

@nigel lawrence - there are a few blocks going up - but definitely the property market is not booming. we are in a situation where supply far exceeds demand. And with consumer confidence at its lowest, construction industry which is obviously propelled by the property market, will also enter ino severe recession this year.
we all hope that Malta does not fall into recession, but with the governments failure to accept the fact that we will and design the appropriate fiscal and monetary stimulus, we are in for a rough ride.

@Ray Buttigieg---construction industry is practically at a halt. Haven't you notice the "few" cranes dotted about the island. Haven't you noticed the horrendous blocks of flats being thrown up.----

it is amazing how government and its agencies are predicting economic growth this year, although at a slower rate than last year. It takes the most optimist to think that the Maltese economy will grow this year. All our major trading partners are officially in recession, tourism is expected to decline due to the euro vs sterling exchange rate, construction industry is practically at a halt, consumer confidence at its lowest in decades and yet public statements forecast growth. The economic planners need to do some real rethinking and the politicians need to start being honest.....Malta will face a severe recession this year....and this is a fact.
