The full-time gainfully occupied population last August increased by 3,103 people while unemployment decreased by 469, when compared to August 2007, the National Statistics Office said.

The NSO said that the according to data provided by the Employment and Training Corporation the labour supply in August increased by 2,634 over the corresponding month in 2007.

The full-time gainfully occupied population increased by 3,103, whereas the registered unemployed decreased by 469.

The labour supply amounted to 151,854 persons. Of these, the full-time gainfully occupied population amounted to 145,733, while the registered unemployed amounted to 6,121.

The net increase of 3,103 gainfully-occupied over the twelve-month period to August 2008 was made up of 2,183 women and 920 men.

On a year-on-year basis, the full-time gainfully occupied population in the public sector decreased by 571. On the other hand, the full-time gainfully occupied population in the private sector increased by 3,674.

In the twelve months leading to August, full-time employment increased by 2,722 in Malta and by 381 in Gozo.
