May God bless the new President

Together with others I congratulate George Abela for his forthcoming Presidency of the Maltese Islands and wish him all God's blessings.

What worries me is when I hear it being said that Dr Abela is going to be President of all Maltese. I feel this phrasing of Dr Abela's future Presidency hurts past Presidents. In spite of their political beliefs and allegiance with the Nationalist or the Labour Party, all past Presidents rose above politics once they were in office.

The only difference that lies with Dr Abela is that his choice was accepted and welcomed by both parties in Parliament. Let us hope that this sense of maturity is a good start for the future of our islands. After all, it was the Nationalist Party leaders who worked untiringly for reconciliation between the Maltese, all along the years. May God bless Dr Abela and the Maltese nation.
