University collective agreement signed

The new collective agreement for university and junior college lecturers was signed today, ending a long-running dispute which saw the lecturers twice taking industrial action.

The agreement was signed by University rector Juanito Camilleri, MUT president John Bencini and Victor Buttigieg, president of the University of Malta Academic Staff Association.

No details of the package were made available. The agreement, however, features salary increases and more flexible working hours so as to allow the university to be open between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Prof. Camilleri and the union leaders said that more than a collective agreement, this was an important element in a reform that would help drive the university to where it needed to be in a globalised environment. This agreement, they said, also placed a stronger focus on research.
