Three taxi drivers had their vehicle and special licence suspended for one month each, following random inspections by the Malta Transport Authority’s enforcement unit.

The three drivers were found providing taxi services without using the taxi meter, the ADT said.

The authority’s Enforcement Unit regularly carries out inspections to ensure that taxi meters are being used.

Between January and December last year, the enforcement team reported 18 taxi drivers for not using the taxi meter and another two for not having a meter installed in their vehicle.

The use of taxi meters, which are sealed and calibrated annually when the vehicle’s road licence is up for renewal, is a legal requirement that ascertains the number of kilometers covered and the relative legal charges (which are fixed) of each trip.

Taxi meters are only not used during trips departing from the airport or the cruise passenger terminal – in which case, rates are fixed and tickets for such trips are purchase from the taxi booths at the Malta International Airport of the Cruise Liner Terminal.
