Stainless Steel Products goes on four-day week
Workers at Stainless Steel Ltd have been put on a four-day week because of a drop in export orders, mostly from the UK, the GWU said this afternoon.
The workers were given the sad news this afternoon and told the measure is expected to last for at least seven weeks.
The meeting was also attended by union officials, who assured the workers that they would continue to monitor the situation.
The company, based in Marsa, produces kitchen sinks and employs just over 100 workers.

If a bit out of point, I'll say what I think about govt employees.
The problem is not their monetary pay, it's their quantity and quality.
There's too many of them, and quite a lot achieve and produce very little. Private companies are continuously trying to stretch their resources to achieve more with less, but the Govt works differently.
Salaries are truly low. A qualified person or someone with a degree who wants to joint a govt dept or entity would have to accept a salary that's 20% less than what the industry is offering as a minimum. So, automatically, the Govt finds it hard to attract ppl of the right calibre.

Most of us take care of there job and do there very best in private sector.
Persons that have been employed with government few years ago, are having various retire plans and having thousand of euros in compensation. What about the privet sector? what will they take if there job is in the end of the line? The employer will have a government inspection or tax compliance inspection most probably.
There are a lot of persons, with no qualifications, having benefits like mobile, car or fuel etc and work with the government. Is that good?

Why don't you have a look a the budget document to see how much government employees are paid before you put your fingers on the keyboard?
You will be ashamed at the wages and salaries.
The only enticement that government workers get is a more secure job, otherwise their pay is miserly.

@ C.Camilleri
You mean 5 persons on board of directors on every government sector?

I agree with you, I work within a Govt. Department and in my case I was promoted last year, this promotion later resulted that for the next 5 years my salary will be 20-30% less than my colleagues who weren't promoted since they work overtime and I don't. Welcome to working with the Govt. Mr. Camilleri.

The economic recovery will be long and hard, it is now time for an urgent stimulus package from the Gov and a meaningful one. Infrastructure projects need to get going, better to pay a man to do something rather than be idle.
Tourism will take a big hard knock this summer - here in the UK we are in terminal meltdown - have seen nothing this bad in my 42 years. UK slowdown has come quicker and faster than the previous ones in the 1980's and 1990's.
Why did this company rely so heavily on UK for exports - many new the UK was a one trick pony basing it's economy on financials after succesive governments destroyed local industry.
Not only do we have a banking crisis, housing crisis we now seem to have a sterling crisis

That's very sad news, even though more or less expected.
SSP is a long-established company, and incorporates a number of very able and talented staff and capable management.
I heartily wish them, and all other factories in Malta facing similar situations, a quick recovery.
Sacrifices must be done, but with a little help, and if they work together, they'll get over this situation.

hallina mr. camilleri u ddahhakx nies!
I spent my first two years working for the government. The pay was a misery and working conditions even worse. Worst of all, the seniors/director showed no respect whatsoever. I can't beleive how I managed to stick for two years. Thanks God I left and started working in private. What a difference!

If I'm not wrong this company was part of Fenech Adami's EU Accession Tour back in 2003 and stated that they will prosper within the EU. I know that nobody knew then about this recession but if they supposedly prospered at least they had from where to "cut" and so would have avoided such pain to its employees.

The global financial crisis continues and there does not seem an end to it well for the time being. Malta is not immune to this and though it is 'sad' news indeed to the workers I am pleased to note that no redundancies have been announced. This situation has become common everywhere with firms stopping production temporarily or reducing the working week.

Govt employees continuously ask for improvement in their pay and conditions of work while those in the private sector bear the brunt of the economic recession. Both Govt and Unions are responsible for the widening gap that exists between the public employees and the private ones. The unions constant demand on the Govt is squeezing public funds which can be applied soften the coming economic slowdown.
