Writing in The Times (Timely Political Sixth Sense, January 8,) PL leader Joseph Muscat is of the opinion that the candidate who places sixth in June's elections should be Malta's sixth MEP if and when the Lisbon Treaty enters into force. Alternattiva Demokratika is in full agreement because this approach serves it well.
The flaw, as rightly pointed out by Simon Busuttil in his article, (January14) is that one cannot elect six members using a five-member rule without risking electing the wrong person and possibly from the wrong party.
By agreeing with the PL, the AD do little to enhance their credibility which was shattered when Arnold Cassola allowed himself to be carried around in triumph by PL supporters for having denied the PN their third MEP seat. With that action, many felt that the AD had become the PL's second division team. Prof. Cassola's endorsement of Dr Muscat's proposal only serves to strengthen this conviction.
