More Maltese travelled last November when compared to the same month in 2007, the National Statistics Office said.
The NSO said that 21,512 Maltese residents travelled by air and sea in November, representing an increase of 8.5 per cent over the same month in 2007. Of these, 18,489 travelled to EU destinations. The most popular European destinations were the UK and Italy. Most outbound tourists were in the 25-44 age bracket.
The NSO also said that 271,874 Maltese travelled between January and November last year, a 6.8 per cent increase over the corresponding period in 2007. Of these, 85.6 per cent travelled to EU destinations with the most visited countries being Italy and the UK.
Over the whole period, outbound male passengers exceeded female ones, accounting for 58 per cent of the total. The largest proportion of outbound passengers - 45.8 per cent - were aged between 25 and 44, the NSO said. These were followed by those in the 45 to 64 age bracket, who accounted for 37.4 per cent of the total outbound tourists.
