Ministry urges Resources Authority to verify tariff figures
The Infrastructure Ministry yesterday urged the Malta Resources Authority to verify the figures used in the calculation of the new water and electricity bills.
The consultants engaged by the MRA to verify the workings of the bills found that the methodology used by the ministry was correct but "data accuracy was not verified".
Reacting to the MRA consultants' report, the ministry welcomed the conclusions about the methodology and pointed out that the regulator did not engage its consultants to verify the figures that were inputted into the system.
"Since this part of the assignment was left out of the MRA's consultants' brief, the latter recommended that this is done to complete verification of this process. Of course, MRA has every right and every power to order such a review if it wishes to do so," the ministry said in a statement. .
Verifying the figures, the ministry said, would show that the revision of the bills was carried out in the most transparent manner and that the bills were justifiable.

The MRA should revise the tariffs on the correct data and not include garages, summer residences and empty properties.
It should also take into account that EneMalta did not submit the correct number of meters nbut only an estimate.
It should also take into account the fact that oil has dropped down to less than a quarter of the price when we had a 95% tariff while now not only has the meters rent been increased but we are being sent bills with effectively a 185% tariff.
This is what the MRA should do not play lackey to the Minister.

I am renting two of my properties, one as a restaurant and the other is a coffee shop. They have been complaining that their expenses are too much - licence, taxes, water and electricity. With these new tariffs they already told me that they are leaving. So I am going to have 2 vacant properties and people are going to lose their jobs. Well done !

The Ministry is feeling victorious with the verification of the methodology used by KMPG and is urging the MRA to now verify the tariff figures. The Ministry is sure that the result of the verification will also be positive according to the data provided for the revision of the tariffs. The result cannot be otherwise. What the ministry should ask the MRA to do is to revise the tariffs to reflect the new low and decreasing oil prices as it is its duty. That is when the ministry will be credible.
