Ministry denies being 'irresponsible' during MUT strike
The Education Ministry yesterday rebutted the Malta Union of Teachers' claims that it acted "irresponsibly" when it issued a circular telling hundreds of parents that last Friday would be a normal school day.
On that day the MUT had ordered the two-hour strike by kindergarten assistants, support kindergarten assistants and learning support assistants, following directives issued last week, after saying that an agreement reached more than a year ago was not being fully observed.
Reacting to an MUT statement, the ministry said it had a duty to ensure that schools cared for children affected by the strike.
The ministry said it remained open to meetings which would resolve this issue.
However, the MUT said that while the ministry was saying that its doors were open, the union's members "had been going in and out of those doors for 18 months" without any proper action being taken.
The union said its council would discuss the "dire" situation tomorrow.

First of all what was promised? why haven't we heard what was promised to them and never given?
As regards to charmaine's comments I fully agree with her. as far as I can read without belittling their title it was assistants that were on strike.
Therefore the Kindergarten teacher should be able to handle her class. As for the children with special needs, what would happen if the support teacher is sick?
Life as usual. Remove you colour coded blinkers whether they being red, blue or green.

That's their problem.
Everyone has a right to strike whether others like it or not and whether it is going to affect them as a strike is meant to.
What you and others should be doing is protesting against Gonzipn for his arrogance and trampling over the rights of ALL workers.

@ Charmaine Mangion
Does your comment imply that teachers have no right to strike? if you think that they have, perhaps you can come up with a way whereby teachers can exercise this right without effecting anybody!

Yet another slip for the Education Minister. Most probably she's wearing the wrong pair of shoes.

A Mangion is absolutely correct. The Ministry was seriously irresponsible. Teachers, Kindergarten Assistants etc are not stupid and they know that MUT is right. Please Minister of Education, stop trying to take people for a ride. You cannot fool all the people all the time. It will do you more credit and you will gain more respect if you admit that "the Ministry should have informed parents that MUT was staging a two hour legitimate strike and it would be unwise to take very young children to school since there would be no one to look after them". The majority of parents were wiser than the Minister and opted to show solidarity with these dedicated persons who look after their children throughout the scholastic year. The MUT rightly so exempted special schools and hospitals. What a difference! Now sensible people have realised who was responsible and who was not. SHAME ON THE MINISTRY AND THE DIRECTORATES.

Does the ministry consider it normal for children to be assembled all in the school hall and 'looked after' by the head and assistant heads? The ministry should have advised parents to drop off their offspring two hours late at which time the striking teachers would have been back at their place of work.
The ministry's ploy was to give the impression that the strike was having no effect on the schools and to belittle the MUT's action.
