A project to extract and eliminate harmful gases at the former Magħtab landfill is drawing to a close, and the government is allocating €30 million for the rehabilitation of the site, as well as the former landfills at Qortin and Wied Fulija. President Eddie Fenech Adami toured the Magħtab landfill yesterday with Resources Minister George Pullicino and Wasteserv officials.
The minister explained that with the closure of the landfills, new waste disposal measures were being taken, including the creation of engineered landfills, a waste recycling plant and a thermal treatment facility.

I hope that this project will done as whenever I pass from the coast road under Maghtab sometimes you can't breathe due to the bad smell in the area.
I am amazed how people walk, go jogging and cycle in that area (mostly on sundays)as I would believe that it is not very healthy to take in that air! And what about the people living around Maghtab?
Also what is happening regarding the water runoff from the rain into the road and then into the sea. Isnt that contaminated water were you see all the time fishermen and snorklers catching fish from that area.
Is there any environmental study that has been done lately about the environmental impact of the surrounding area?
