Francis Cauchi of Għarb turned 100 yesterday week. To mark the occasion, his son Fr John Mary concelebrated Mass with the centenarian's grandsons, Fr Christopher of Toronto and Fr Alex of Brazil, at his residence.

Mr Cauchi, who was awarded Ġieħ l-Għarb in 2001, received a visit from Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono. The Visitation Band of Għarb played marches outside his residence. Francis, known as Ċikku, has eight children. Another three died when they were babies. He has 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His wife Marija died in 1999.

Mr Cauchi is fond of reading and jots down past experiences. He has a detailed record of the building of Ta' Pinu sanctuary.
