Incentives planned for aircraft registration
The government intends to move legislation by the middle of this year to improve the conditions for the registration of business jets in Malta, Transport Minister Austin Gatt said today. The legislative will also feature incentives.
He made his comments when he toured an Airbus 318 Elite, which has been registered in Malta by the Swiss-based company Comlux.
The aircraft is the second to have been registered here by the company, and a third will follow in the coming weeks.
Dr Gatt said the government would like to see Malta becoming a centre for the registration of aircraft, particularly business jets. Indeed, aviation could become an important sector within the economy, as the Lufthansa Technik operations in Malta showed, the minister said.

The Isle of Man started registering aircraft on the 1st May 2007. They were of course delighted to find that "M" had not been taken and snapped it up. It is true that prefixes are allocated by the ITU but a country can ask for a particular one if it is available.

Sorry to have to correct you Charles. I similarly hate anything to do with colonialism including the new colonialism into which we have been led. However, I hope that this will clarify things re prefixes.
Under colonial times pre WWII, Malta calls began first with the prefix VP3 which was changed after the war to ZB1 and changed again to 9H after independence. The prefixes are allocated by the ITU.
The VP prefix with a different number was used to identify the different UK colonies which was later changes to Z, ZB1 indicating Malta, ZB2 Gibraltar, ZC4 Cyprus etc.
M, G, GM, GI, GW, GD etc are similarly reserved by the ITU for the UK.
You may wish to have a look at this link where you have a list of all the international prefixes.

Now that the ICAO registration prefix "M" has been taken by the Isle of Man, Malta should at least try to change the present "9H" relic of colonial times to something like "MT" to keep up with the times.
