MUT strike a success

Union accuses government of hostility

The Malta Union of Teachers shall not be fighting what it described as the “government’s hostility towards trade unionism” by not attending a meeting the Education Directorate had set for Tuesday. The union’s council will also be meeting to consider further action.

The union said in a statement that the two-hour strike for supply categories and kindergarten assistants this morning was a complete success.

However, a statement by the Education Ministry advising parents that today was a normal school day, was deplorable. This, MUT said, put the safety and security of children at risk and several head teachers were asked to place all children in halls and to stay with them themselves or their assistant heads.

The union called on the authorities to investigate allegations of intimidation by some of the college principals in state schools who called head teachers at their homes late in the evening giving them instructions.
