Edward Demicoli unfazed by hunters' boycott

Nationalist MEP candidate Edward Demicoli said he will not be intimidated by the Federation for Hunting and Conservation's (FKNK) decision to boycott him.

FKNK has urged hunters, trappers and their families not to cast a single vote for Mr Demicoli in June's European Parliament Elections, after he publicly denounced spring hunting during the launch of his electoral campaign last Sunday.

"If the hunters' association believes it is going to shut me up, it had better change strategy because it will not work - I will continue to push for spring hunting to be stopped," Mr Demicoli said, reacting to the directive.

The FKNK insisted it was "ironic and shameless" that Mr Demicoli, who held the position of deputy head of the Malta/EU Information Centre (MIC) for the past 10 years, chose to attack hunting during his campaign launch.

He "conveniently" forgot and totally contradicted the information that MIC had "enlightened hunters and trappers" with prior to the EU referendum vote.

The FKNK said this proved that every single hunter's vote in favour of EU entry in the referendum was based on misinformation and consequently, Malta's EU membership was based on a hoax.

Mr Demicoli countered this by saying such statements showed that the federation was still "living in the past" and was still failing to understand how a democracy worked. Such claims were harming the hunters' cause.

He said the truth is that had the FKNK exercised control on "certain hunting elements and rogue hunters", the hunting situation in Malta would be different.

Contacted by The Times, Mr Demicoli said he saw "no contradiction" between the present scenario on hunting and trapping in Malta and the information published by MIC when he was its deputy head.

"I'm very proud of my work with MIC," he stressed, explaining that MIC's role was to provide information on the negotiations going on at the time.

"We explained exactly what was negotiated," Mr Demicoli maintained. "The goalposts shifted" three years later, following a case in Finland, he said.

The present situation was a result of disagreements in interpretation, which the EU Commission and the government dragged on until 2007, Mr Demicoli pointed out.

Hunting in spring was supposed to continue for turtle dove and quail, he maintained, as was originally negotiated.

In its statement, the FKNK quoted from statements published in a MIC Fact Sheet entitled, Hunting and Trapping Enthusiasts, which said: "...hunting in Malta is mostly practised in spring because it depends on migratory birds. The EU acknowledged these arguments and Malta will be able to retain hunting in spring and autumn even after membership."

It continued: "...hunting in spring can continue in Malta for turtledoves and quail. As a result, therefore, after membership Maltese hunters will continue to be able to hunt in spring."

The federation said this was the first directive issued as it launched its MEP election campaign with the slogan FKNK - For Your Rights in Europe. The federation is not excluding fielding a candidate in June's elections.

In the last MEP elections, Lino Farrugia, FKNK secretary, had contested as an independent and garnered 3,119 votes.

Mr Demicoli tries to compare spring hunting in Finland with spring hunting in Malta. Well for his information, spring hunting in Finland is still allowed on certain species. He knows what happened to those who tried to compare Switzerland with Malta.

As for bird trapping, Spain, France, Italy and Austria still trap finches the same way we do and without any trouble from the EU. So if he wants to compare us to them, he should be in favour of trapping.

Well for one in the last election the P.N. got the lowest votes since Malta got it`s Independence, as a matter of fact the P.N. hasn`t got half of the majority of votes, when you add the MLP,AD and AN parties votes together, more and more with all these things we are getting, Mr Edward Demicoli should have better mentioned those Illegal Migrants we have plus the more that will be coming in the next coming months ,and not the hunting subject ,after all the whole of the E.U. is practised the sport of hunting, some of them even in the months of March,April and May. I for one I`m not going to trust him with my vote,

Mr. Demicoli might wish to have a word with Dr. Gonzi
who stubbornly insists to waste the Attorney General's time and our taxes with a court case vs the EU, simply to try and save face with hunters.

Dr. Gonzi might also deem it fit to explain, why the PN is trying to green wash itself (re hunting) when it has also hand-picked Dr. Perici Calascione (FKNK's legal advisor) to contest the MEP elections with the PN itself.

Most of us are sick about PN's dirty tricks....but it seems the PN guru's deem that some are still swallowing the bait!

@ Karl Abela, are we practising democracy in this country? Don't you think that Mr Demicoli and those involved in the referendum should resign? Is it acceptable that political parties promise one thing and then they do otherwise? are we accountable or not? sooner or later this kind of attitude towards the Maltese citizens is going to backfire, in fact the number of voters in 2008 election who refrained from voting is a cause of concern mainly for the PN.

if the EU has taken Malta to court because they said there was never an agreement on spring hunting (unlike what MIC and the same Mr. Demicoli promised), what exactly would Mr. Demicoli be fighting ?

Mr Demicoli is obviously well-versed in public relations. But he won't get elected on public relations alone. He seems to think it is enough to utter some platitudes on the birds and the bees and - off he goes to Brussels with a handsome salary and whatever allowances.

Maybe he will, but he must earn his election by answering the key question that is on everybody's mind and will be even more so in June. WHAT IS MR DEMICOLI'S POLICY ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION?
V Fenech (on 16/1/09)
Mr Demicoli,

Don't you think that you (MIC) and your party have gone too far with all these hunting gimmicks??

Do you remeber how Dr.Eddie, once a PN leader, had lowered the required age to acquire a hunting licence to 18 on the eve of an election???

Mr. Abela Wadge, as you stated, everyone is entitled to air his beliefs and views. However, I am sure you will agree that it does not reflect nicely on anyone who confirms that hunting and trapping is to stay with the aim of obtaining a Yes Vote. The point being discussed here is that Mr. Demicoli tricked hunters and trappers. I cannot underdstand how you can agree with such irresponsible behaviour by a MIC official.
Jeffrey Abela Wadge (on 16/1/09)
Because Mr Demicoli occupied a post where he was responsible to give information does not mean that he has to actually agree with that same information. This shows that he did his job correctly and he did not modify what he officially stated to be in line with what he believes. In fact he has shown that he is not afraid to state what he believes in even if it goes against what a section of the Maltese (the hunters) believes. We are a democratic country and everyone should be free to state his beliefs and no hunters have the right to shut him up as if they are running the country. The boycott can also backfire on the hunters. If the hunters and their families boycott Mr Demicoli, many others who are against hunting may give him their vote. Anyway, can we ever reach a stage where a person can express his views without receiving threats etc? If we do not agree, let us agree to disagree and leave it at that.
MARK MIFSUD BONNICI (on 16/1/09)
Strange that a hunters boycott should strengthen some candidate's campaign.

Having no other controversy to attract votes what else has this man got in his favor. The only thing this man is known for is the information he was giving the public on behalf of the EU as MIC's deputy head. Information that guaranteed hunting and trapping which he now opposes.

What is to ensure that if elected as an MEP, a far more responsible position than that of a MIC deputy head, this person will not go back on his duty on any other topic.

People elect an MEP for far more important issues and proven qualities. Mr. Demicoli has yet to prove he can tackle any or at least be consistent in what he is paid to do.

If Mr. Demicoli is depending on the anti hunter to get himself elected, since spring hunting seems to be his priority gimmick, basing this same stand as taken by Alternattiva can only spell disaster.

Mr. Demicoli what else do you have to offer? 30,000 or more have already been told not to favor you with their vote.

"The goalposts shifted" indeed!!
Andrew Gatt (on 16/1/09)
@ Karl Abela..........actually, who does Edward Demicoli think HE'S kidding? His OWN PARTY is in Government and is fighting the EU in Court to retain Spring Hunting as guaranteed in writing by MIC (of which he was Deputy Head) and by Dr E Fenech Adami as PN leader at the time!! Yet another PN candidate is on the EU election party ticket IN FAVOUR of Spring Hunting. The mind boggles!

These are political somersaults of the highest order and an insult to anyone with an ounce of grey matter between the ears. I guess some people will say and do anything to get on the Brussels gravy train!!!
Karl Abela (on 16/1/09)
Who does FKNK think they are kidding????

We all know that the boycott infact not against Edward Demicoli but against the PN.

Thats how things always worked in this wretched country. Its always political. There always has to be approximately half the country to oppose EVERYTHING that has remotely anything to do with the government.
J. Schembri (on 16/1/09)
Can we start reading about how Mr Demicoli is going to address the serious problems that our country is facing and going to face during the months to come.? Please wake up PN and start treating us as mature citizens
albert spiteri (on 16/1/09)
Edward Demicoli, is Press and Political Officer of the European Commission Representation in Malta for the last few years. His role includes informing Brussels about whatever (of interest to the EU) happens in Malta. His loyalties are, therefore, towards the EU, not Malta.
Prior, Demicoli was Deputy-Head of the Malta EU Information Centre (MIC). Leading to the 2003 referendum his job at MIC was that of giving us voters true and objective information on anything about EU, enabling us to make an educated choice on whether to join the EU or not.
Now Edward goes public campaining for a Malta EU parliamentary seat! That is certainly cheeky!
I ask, where exactly do Edward's loyalties stand? Words come cheap, but actions speak volumes, dear Edward. Can he be our loyal representative in Brussels?
Where does Malta stand in Edward's priorities? Can Malta believe Edward on issues like illegal immigration, abortion, gay marriages, stem cell research...etc etc etc and a host of other etceteras??? Mr. Demicoli's past shows him as a first-class EU-fanatic. Now he's making obvious his ability to declare anything that fits his agenda.
Dear Edward, Tongue-in-cheek is extremely bad humor, and, in your context, seriously lacks subtlety.
