Eleven unions are forming a working group with one representative of each with the aim of working better together and contribute on issues of national importance.

The unions met this morning and decided to have a working meeting next week. They proposed to name their group Għaqda Unions Maltin and will be meeting on a monthly basis.

Their first task, MUT president John Bencini said, was to draw up a set of priorities for occupational health and safety. For although the legislation was good there was a lack of enforcement.

They also discussed a code of ethics for trade unions.

Mr Bencini noted that the door was still open for unions that did not attend this morning’s meeting.

The 11 unions present for this morning’s meeting were the General Workers’ Union, the Malta Union of Teachers, the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses, the Union of Cabin Crew, the Union Ħaddiema Bank Ċentrali, the Union Technical and Clerical Mepa, the Union Professjonisti Awtorità għall-Ambjent u Ppjanar, the University of Malta Academic Staff Association, the Airline Pilots Association, the Union Periti u Inġiniera Servizz Pubbliku and the Association of Airline Engineers.
