Last weekend, Aloysians Prominent faced Luxol HC in a match they needed to win to stay close to the league leaders.
Luxol, however, looked to have other plans in mind. They produced a spirited display and made their intentions clear after opening a three-goal advantage by the sixth minute.
Aloysians levelled matters following some fast breaks from Jerome Zammit and Rado Kirov. They clicked into gear and added four more goals to their tally. But, before half-time, Luxol had narrowed the deficit to 9-12.
Both teams scored three times each in a balanced opening to the second half. Then, Aloysians stepped up their game and by the 24th minute moved five goals up, notwithstanding the fine showing of Luxol keeper Joseph Tanti.
Those present thought Luxol were down and out but a remarkable rally soon saw them back in contention. There were only 15 seconds left on the clock when Luxol grabbed the equaliser (20-20) to deny Aloysians victory.
Top scorer: Steve Cilia - eight goals (Luxol).
In the other match from the men's league, Kavallieri RS2 went down to La Salle 17-28.
Andrew Said was back for La Salle after injury and immediately left his mark. In the opening 14 minutes, La Salle scored seven goals without reply to surge into a comfortable lead.
Kavallieri were finding it hard to create openings as La Salle went in for the interval leading 13-5.
Christian McLean struck three goals in a row for La Salle as the second half got underway to pave the way for his team's victory.
Kavallieri did try to put up a fight, Matthew Aquilina leading their charge by scoring twice in quick succession to lift his team's morale.
However, by that time, the damage had already been inflicted and La Salle were long home and dry.
Top scorer: Matthew Aquilina - seven goals (Kavallieri).
