Statue of St Elijah

A life-size franka stone statue of the Saint Elijah is located at Triq Żekka c/w Triq it-Teatru. The saint is portrayed with his right hand raised pointing to the sky and holding keys and a flaming sword in the left hand.

The statue is standing on a pedestal and is mounted on a flared, fluted and highly elaborate column that emerges from the corner's baseboard. A cartouche with an inscription relating to indulgences is found below the pedestal at its centre.

St Elijah is believed to have been lifted into the heavens on a chariot of fire from Mount Carmel, hence the presence of the saint's stature at this corner just opposite the church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Mepa scheduled St. Elijah statue as a Grade 1 national monument as per Government Notice number 276/08 in the Government Gazette dated March 28.
