Man fined €4,000 for ignoring MEPA enforcement notices
A man has been fined €4,000 after ignoring MEPA enforcement notices and continued to carry out construction works on a protected site near Fomm Ir-Rih.
Oreste Galea an enforcement officer with MEPA, told the court that when he arrived on the site at Fomm ir-Rih he personally handed the enforcement notice to Christopher Borg who said that it was his work. Mr Galea added that he found a bulldozer and a rock cutter at the site.
He said the particular site had been scheduled in March 2005 and formed part of the coastal cliffs of Malta.
Rene Attard a scheduling officer with MEPA confirmed this and said that the site had high scenic value and acted as a buffer for surrounding fields.

@-philip pace-
The MEPA has no control whatsoever over illegal structures erected before 1992.
Your comment sounds politically biased. Why only between 1987 and 1992?

To Mr.G. Zammit.
I knew that .
Where is your sense of humour?
To Mr. Karl Abela.
This applies to you as well but I'm not sure if you read my notes right as I referred to the ILLEGAL BUILDINGS CONSTRUCTED BETWEEN 1987 TO 1992!
Do you get my hint?

Well done Mepa, for fining the guy 4000 Euros. I guess this is one of the first cases of fines to come soon. May I suggest that you take a little look around, where you can see whole illegal derilect villages, next to to popular bays, with no sewage system, and no services whatsoever. You can also have a look at rooms cut in rocks in popular bays, or rooms in fields, which are supposed to be Tool Rooms. May all the officers at MEPA use the same iron fist with all the cases, be it a strong building contractor or a simple family man, looking for somewhere quite to unwind. Let us hear more of this MEPA.

not that 4,000 Euros is a huge amount of money in the first place! especially if there was irreparable damage done to the area!

Why did MEPA and Gonzipn not pull down ic-Caqnu's Hotel in Marfa when it was built on public land but simply asked Caqnu to pay a derisory compensation when considering the value of land for a hotel?
Maybe the quote friend and friend of friend has something to do with it?

Philip, your tactic of basing your argument on a spelling mistake does not impress me or anyone....give us some arguments with beef.
In any case, the government is precisely doing just what you are mentioning....removing illegal buildings & structure...hello?!?!?! Do you care to read The Times everyday?

well I am not Nostradamus, but I bet that in the next few days, we will see that MEPA has reduced the fine.

To the chap who was fined - do not worry. You can now plead you employ workers with you, the economic situation is bad, and you can't afford it.
Check out last week's Times of Malta what happened at Attard Bros.
You can always get a discount !!

To Karl Abela.
God has nothing to do with this.
Would we see the same Government removing all the illegal buildings that sprouted up from 1987 to 1992 when there was no Mepa enforcement?
If that happens then God has something to do with this as He would send thunderbolts to destroy all those illegal buildings as the present would never resort to do this.
It would be then called a DIVINE INTERVENTION.
