Veterans outshine juniors in 2009 curtain-raiser

The annual match between junior and veteran players, marking the start of the new chess year, was held recently at the Malta Chess Federation premises in Sliema.

Sixteen players took part in this friendly one-round event which the veterans won 6-2.

The pairings were selected according to player strength per team.

Andrew Grillage vs Colin Pace 0-1; Duncan Vella vs Walter Vella Gera 1-0; Justin Axiaq vs Jorgen Hanselmann 0-1; Ron Sammut vs Jurgen Grima 1-0; Nicholas Armeni vs Ivan Attard 0-1; Anna Camilleri vs Nathan Curmi 1-0; James Grillage vs Ray Azzopardi 0-1; Ray Portelli vs Malcolm Vella 1-0.

Meanwhile, the federation held its annual general meeting last month.

The newly-elected council is composed of Geoffrey D. Borg (president), Stephen Farrugia (vice-president), Colin Pace (general secretary), Jonathan J. Borg (treasurer) and Ronald Sammut, Raymond Azzopardi, Marilyn Sciortino and Noel Grima (members).
