Luxol and Medsea reach cup final

Holders Luxol and Hibs Medsea will contest the two-legged Louis Borg Cup women's final on January 22 and 25 after having the better of Honey Athleta and Depiro respectively in last weekend's semi-finals.

These two teams will also figure in the final of the MBA Shield on February 10.

As expected, Luxol prevailed in their match against Athleta who produced a spirited display and also led during some periods of the match.

Luxol had a strong start to open a 15-4 lead but, surprisingly, Athleta came back into the match to change ends 22-21 ahead.

Athleta continued to enjoy the upperhand in the third session and it was only in the last minutes that Luxol manged to take a 34-31 lead.

Spurred on by their top-scorer Francesca Psaila Savona, Luxol increased the tempo in the final quarter to outclass Athleta and win 52-35.

Medsea, meanwhile, maintained their unbeaten record in all competitions this season when they saw off Depiro 70-51. Medsea could not have hoped for a better start when they stunned Depiro to open a 24-2 advantage.

But Charles Bonnici's girls showed great character as the second session got underway and closed the gap to a single point 29-28. However, Hibs still led 37-32 at half-time.

Any hopes Depiro had of piling up the pressure on their opponents all but disappeared in the third quarter as Medsea moved 50-33 ahead. Hibs retained their composure this time, thwarting Depiro from victory and booking their place in another final.
