Dramatic airlifting of pregnant woman while migrants remain at sea

The army is waiting for the weather to subside before making any attempt to transfer 161 migrants ashore from a cargo ship that rescued them on Sunday.
A pregnant woman who was in the group was airlifted to hospital late last night in dramatic operation by the AFM.
The cargo ship yesterday dropped anchor in Anchor Bay, which is not as exposed to the rough seas and strong winds. But attempts by the army to transfer the migrants aboard two military boats in the afternoon were unsuccessful because of the inclement weather.
An army spokesman said a request for blankets was made between Sunday and yesterday but this could not be met because of rough seas that made any shipment impossible.
The 162 migrants - 133 men, 28 women, one of whom is pregnant, and a boy - on Sunday sent a distress signal by satellite phone to the army from a location at sea about 59 nautical miles south of the island. The army immediately sent a patrol boat but, as the weather worsened, it instructed a cargo ship in the vicinity to take them aboard from the small wooden boat they were travelling in. The cargo ship then began approaching the island but was unable to safely unload the migrants onto the patrol boat. It consequently spent the night anchored off the island.
But a spokesman for the AFM said the pregnant woman was airlifted from the cargo ship by helicopter and transferred to hospital in a difficult operation in gale force winds at about 10.30 p.m.
If today's forecast for more rain and winds persists, the operation will be further hampered.
The migrants are the first boatload rescued this year.

Kenneth Galea - "The pregnant ILLEGAL immigrant should not have paid the human trafficker to make the dangerous crossing from Libya. It just goes to show how irresponsible she is!!!!!! Why should the Maltese authorities be responsible for her total disregard to the life she is carrying???"
It obviously has not crossed your mind that the sole reason for her taking this trip is probably "the life she is carrying".

Just because we are catholic , compasionate and all that does NOT mean that we should put ourselves in a greater crisis than what we already in with the numbers of illegal immigrants.
Our army are risking their lives to rescue a bunch of illegals that obviously have no regard for their own saftey . And by saving them , feeding them , homing them , giving them free mobiles , rights etc.. , we are sending the wrong message .
Before the EU , when we used to keep them in detention for longer than 18 months , when they didn't have all the rights they have today , we did not see them flocking here in such numbers . But of course now that they have all these rights , they let their friends know how happy they are here . (no doubt with mobile phones given to them free from our taxes) .
Turn them back! Give them nothing! If we have to take them in , make their life hell . The message will soon be heard by their friends in Africa and the numbers of illegals will decrease .

Mr K Galea: you say that "I have every sacred right for my own bed in Malta because I was born and bred on this once beautiful island." Sacred?
The Maltese archipelago was never populated by human beings before it became an island. Thus all populations the descendants of whom are today called 'Maltese' were at one point or another in history immigrants, be they Bronze age villagers, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Vandals, Arabs, Normans etc. What, then, gives us a right which is more 'sacred' than that of others?
History? Maltese history is a history of immigration; not the correctargument to support your proclamation of sacred right to your own native bed.
Generations before you? That hardly entitles us to the right to deny a woman healthcare to safeguard the birth of her offspring, a member of a future generation, does it?

To all those pointing there fingers to those who oppose illegal migration. Don't you get it? The point here is not whether to help or not to help someone in distress. We all have a heart. Stop playing the saints and be honest with yourselves. Can Malta keep taking the never ending numbers? No, ofcourse not!! That's utter madness!
So instead of just wasting time on accusing, why don't you get realistic and start voicing your concerns. We should carry our burden according to our resources. Anymore than that shall have serious repercussions and destabilise our society which will benefit no-one!

Franco Farrugia: do not be discouraged from speaking out against intolerance such as we read daily in this forum. Yesterday was the anniversary of the birth of Edmund Burke who said: "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." His words ring true today in Malta as never before.

Perhaps the woman was told that Europe accepted immigrants. Perhaps she thought that her child would have a better life in Europe rather than in a village in the middle of Africa. Perhaps the information she got was all made up by the traffickers about the trip and how welcoming people where in Europe. Surely a pregnant woman wouldn't go on such a trip without a good reason.
Perhaps this is the first time she has met people from an Army that treats her with some respect, doesn't attempt to rape her, or perhaps rule her country in a military junta style government.
Perhaps this is her first chance to see some humantity .. though judging by the comments on these pages perhaps she is wrong.

@Robert Callus
Why don't you make the illegal pregnant woman a bed at your home if you feel so passionate about this issue????? Do not mix eligibility with insurance. The woman has none of that, she is not eligible to free medical treatment in Malta and no doubt she has no insurance. Free medical treatment applies only to those who contributed towards the system by means of taxes and NI contributions.
@Franco Farrugia
If you think we lost our souls leave the island and emigrate to Somalia where you can give these people a helping hand in their own country.

Not entitled to use Mater Dei if she has no insurance???? How low can we get? Where has humanity gone?
Since everyone seems blinded by hate, may I be the first to look at the positive, that we have people in our Army who put their own lives in danger to save others, and that luckily we have a free health system.

After reading these comments, I realise all the more how we have lost everything, here in Malta. We are lost, body and soul! And soul, especially!

The pregnant ILLEGAL immigrant should not have paid the human trafficker to make the dangerous crossing from Libya. It just goes to show how irresponsible she is!!!!!! Why should the Maltese authorities be responsible for her total disregard to the life she is carrying??? And the alternative is send her back where she came from that is Libya or Yemen!!!! Libya's medical facilities are up to standard providing you can pay for treatment. Medical treatment is free to those who are eligible only. The illegal immigrants should not form part of the never ending waiting list of the Mater Dei Hospital.

@Dempster
100% Agreed! The PL and the PN are taking the Maltese people for a ride in respect of this national crisis. In particular the PN, currently we have a PN government and the ultimate responsibility lies with the party who is governing. I get the impression that the PL might have been struck by this political correctness fever! NO VOTE TO BOTH PARTIES FOR SURE!!!!!!!

Mr. K Galea, if as you say "The illegal pregnant woman is NOT entitled to use the Mater Dei hospital" what would you propose as an alternative? A manger, perhaps, in a stable? God help us, things REALLY have not changed in 2009 years.

@I Galea
I hope voters teach our politicians a big lesson come the June MEP elections. When the weather conditions improve these economic migrants must be taken back to Libya and Yemen where they came from. The illegal pregnant woman is NOT entitled to use the Mater Dei hospital, you cannot just walk in and get free treatment. Is she insured or what????
This is why they keep coming because they get away with murder!

The ship should have been instructed to sail away from Malta perhaps to Libya and deposit the illegal immigrats there.
The Maltese people are really fed up to their noses with them and Gobzipn and all politicians and political parties shall get our answer on our ballot paper.
