PL parliamentary group backs Abela for President

File photo: Joseph Muscat with George Abela.

The Labour parliamentary group has approved the nomination of George Abela to become the next President. The nomination was discussed by the group this morning.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Opposition leader Joseph Muscat had reportedly already agreed on the nomination.

Dr Abela was deputy leader of the MLP between 1992 and 1998 and was runner-up to Dr Muscat in the MLP leadership election last June.

Is PM Gonzi arrogant having taken the lead to nominate for President a person from the other spectrun of our political divide? God bless Dr.Abela. Thank you President Fenech Adami for what you have done to our country.

Really, did Joseph Muscat and the PL Parliamentary Group had any other choice?

Or better, did Gonzi leave them any other choice?

Are you really rejoicing about Tony Blair possibly being the next President of the EU. Is this the same Tony Blair that supported George W. Bush on the war on Iraq. A war based on lies.

At last a breath of fresh air in the local way of doing politics. A vote of thanks to both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition for showing the the way to all Maltese of goodwill that instead of continuous political confrontation and negative attitudes, another way exists in determining national issues which should unite and not divide us. Of course, the political debate will carry on and that is how it should be provided that this is done in a civilised manner and focusing on the political content of issues and not dragging in the personal aspects.
Congratulations to Dr George Abela, President in waiting.

What a wonderful day

Dr George Abela for President and Tony Blair, the former UK Labour prime minister, is re-emerging as a possible choice to be the European Union’s first full-time president after four momentous crises reinforced the argument for having a high-profile international personality in the job

music to my ears

What about the PN.? As reported in yesterday's newspapers there should have been a Cabinet meeting this morning. Did the government cabinet and the PN parliamentary group back Lawrence Gonzi's move to nominate Abela for president?
