Toyota applies new green concept to first models

The Auris 1.33 will be among the first Toyota models to sport 'Optimal Drive' technology.

Toyota Optimal Drive is a new concept in powertrain engineering and design that is being applied to all new Toyota models.

The Japanese car maker says the concept "means no compromise on performance, emissions or specification. This new technology heralds a new generation of engines and advanced transmissions, with low friction components, lightweight compact design and enhanced combustion efficiency."

'Optimal Drive' covers a range of technologies that can be applied to achieve real-world results in environmental performance, making the best use possible of the marque's engineering skills. The result is environmental efficiency, but no loss of driving pleasure.

Its principal aims are to reduce emissions, increase fuel combustion efficiency and cause no compromise in driving pleasure. This contrasts with some car manufacturers' approach which have opted to launch special eco-themed models with design, engineering and equipment tweaks to achieve lower emissions and better fuel consumption, often to the detriment of the drive experience.

Like 'Hybrid Synergy Drive', as featured on the Prius, 'Optimal Drive' is a central element in Toyota's strategy for environmental leadership and its long-term ambition of building the ultimate zero emissions car.

The new iQ, Avensis and Auris 1.33 'Stop & Start' will be among the first to sport 'Optimal Drive'. Each provides significant gains in environmental performance and running costs, while maintaining high standards of quality, comfort and driver rewards.
