Joseph Borg has been awarded academic fellowships by the Human Genome Organisation (HUGO) and by the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO).

Mr Borg is studying for a Ph.D. research degree under the academic supervision of Prof. Alex E. Felice at the University' Laboratory of Molecular Genetics and at Mater Dei Hospital, partly supported by the Malta Government Scholarship Scheme.

The research on haemoglobin genetics and thalassaemia led by Prof. Felice, concerns fundamental mechanisms on gene control that may be relevant in diabetes and other diseases common in Malta, or to regenerate adult blood cells suitable for transplantation.

The University has a long tradition of research interests on haemoglobin.

The HUGO fellowship enabled Mr Borg to participate in the sixth Mutation Detection training course held in Rotterdam, Netherlands, last October during which he made a presentation on 'Identification of globin gene regulators using a whole genome analysis approach'.

The EMBO fellowship permits Mr Borg to visit the Erasmus University, Rotterdam, to conduct experimental studies about the biochemical mechanisms that control globin gene expression in normal development and in diseases such as thalassaemia.
