NGOs call for support to Climate Change Bill
A number of non-governmental organisations are appealing to MPs to support a Climate Change Bill due to be debated in Parliament next week.
The organisations, led by Friends of the Earth, said that climate change is considered to be one of the most pressing concerns that will be faced by Malta and the EU within the next five to 10 years. According to recent statistics the Maltese electorate is worried about escalating fuel and relative costs such as energy prices and an increase in surcharge rates. A legislation committing the country to a sustainability plan that tackles emissions and renewable energy will have to define strict parameters if Malta is to reach the targets set by EU regulations, they said.
Friends of the Earth is proposing that through the integration of environmentally friendly systems of transport and energy, CO2 emissions are reduced through legally binding commitments to cut emissions year-on-year.
These cuts should be equal to at least a 30 percent reduction of EU-wide domestic emissions by 2020 and 90 percent by 2050. FoE Malta has been collecting signatures for a petition since February and fully supported the Bill as proposed by Labour MP Leo Brincat.
FoE said that more than 2000 letters weresent by concerned citizens to all MPs asking them to commit their support to the new legislation in favour of a strong law tackling climate change. In doing so, Malta’s politicians will be taking the lead and answering the call for a groundbreaking piece of legislation that all political parties should be proud of, it said.
The other NGOs calling for the Bill to be supported are BirdLife, Din L-Art Helwa, Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar, Light Pollution Awareness Group, Moviment Graffitti, Nature Trust Malta and Zminijietna.
Alternattiva Demokratika has also said it backed the NGO's appeal.

“I have spent a long research career studying physics that is closely related to the greenhouse effect, for example, absorption and emission of visible and infrared radiation, and fluid flow,” he said in the statement. “Based on my experience, I am convinced that the current alarm over carbon dioxide is mistaken.”

@Martin Galea Degiovanni: Re-the scientists you mentioned who won the Nobel prize. These won the Nobel prize for Peace, not for Science. But let me give you a quote from one scientists out of thousands:Physics professor William Happer GS ‘64 has some tough words for scientists who believe that carbon dioxide is causing global warming. “This is George Orwell. This is the ‘Germans are the master race. The Jews are the scum of the earth.’ It’s that kind of propaganda,”
Happer, the Cyrus Fogg Brackett Professor of Physics, said in an interview. “Carbon dioxide is not a pollutant. Every time you exhale, you exhale air that has 4 percent carbon dioxide. To say that that’s a pollutant just boggles my mind. What used to be science has turned into a cult.” Happer served as director of the Office of Energy Research in the U.S. Department of Energy under President George H.W. Bush and was subsequently fired by Vice President Al Gore, reportedly for his refusal to support Gore’s views on climate change.

Yes politicians should check what reputable scientists are saying. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is one such source. These scientists have received the Nobel Prize.
You seem to treat scientific evidence as though it is a dogma. Please realise that scientific facts and data are always being debated upon, in an intelligent manner.
What will you gain from business as usual ? Perhaps you should watch this video clip instead http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zORv8wwiadQ . Hopefully it will make you understand that a green economy is the way forward and that the fossil fuel economy is nothing but a fossilized dinosaur from the past.
You mention that "Global Warming is only natural,.... Sometimes it cools by a degree or two, sometimes it warms up by a degree or two." That is only partially true, but you conveniently forget to mention that the rate of change recorded during the past few decades is nothing like any other. Yes, nature is very resilient to changes in climate over a long period of time but unfortunately its not the same when it comes to abrupt changes.
Before making such uninformed statements please check your facts and sources.

I wonder what would the Government's reaction!
Hope that all these NGO's supporting Labour's quest would not also end up at the resources authority. Remember that it is already occupied by the unions who awaits a reply or explanation from Gonzi for the sake of the general public.

@Michael Cutajar: BTW: The sea levels should have risen already acording to the AGW theory. Al Gore even said that some Pacific Islanders had to leave their homes and emigrate to New Zealand due to their Islands drowining in the rising sea levels. You know what? Sea levels have not risen at all. Where I have been swimming these last 50 years I cannot see any rise at all. According to my physics, if the Pacific rises 1 mm then the Mediterranean sea rises by 1mm. That is science. Hence no rise in sea level. I amnot the only one saying this. Many scientists are saying this. For the sea levels to rise, the ice in Greenland and Antarctica has to melt. The fact is that it is increasing. Unbelievable? That's because our media are saying so. But media moguls are not scietists, they are just after our money. They want to scare us, so they will be able to sel their newspapers, Tv shows etc. One of the greatest promoters of AGW is the BBC.

We are living in a mad world.
We cannot discuss if we think different from the establishment on the environment
We cannot discuss from the the establishement on different races
We cannot discuss on what we think about the differences there are between man and woman
We cannot disuss againt multiculturalism
and many other subjects.
In reality democracy doesn't exist.
You cannot go against the rules of the establishment.

@Michael Cutajar: You call those who are skeptical about Anthropogenic Global Warming "the flat earthers of the 21st century ". It is easy calling names. That is usually a sign of an argument lost. There are thousands of scientists, owners of PhD's around the world who are highly skeptical of AGW. Are these all flat earthers? The AGW is pushed by a few scientists and a lot of failed politicians, who produce reports theorising AGW so that they can continue getting the millions of dollars in funds from our taxes and then they have the gall to call us flat earthers. I have a degree in science and can understand most of the reports including the pro-warming ones. I also have a brain and my skepticsm tells me to go out and read and check and weigh. Please note that a skeptic is not = to a denier. A skeptic is one who checks the medicine before gulping down what the doctor orders.

The IPCC tries to convince everyone that their report is authored by 2500 scientists. The fact is that 2500 scientists were asked to join in. Many had a look and did nothing. Others plainly disagreed with what they saw. In actual fact no more than 60 scientists actually approved the report on anthropogenic-global-warming. On the other hand, thousands of other scientists worldwide are saying that the recent warming was just a natural cycle.
Today AGW theorists have a problem. The planet is refusing to heat up according to their computer models. In fact it is actually cooling down. It has been cooling down since 1998. The current freezing being experienced all over the planet is definitely not global warming. Global warming means, well, warming. If some global warmists try to say that this freezing is due to global warming, like some are already trying to say, well its all baloney.
The north pole ice cap had a record ice volume January 2008 and more January 2009.
In the USA some government geniuses proposed putting a tax on the intestinal gases emanating from cows, swine etc. something like $30 on each head.
This planet is not getting warm. Its getting mad.

I am all out to protect our environment.
However we cannot put our own well being at risk.
At the moment it is complete madness to put more financial burden on the tax payers and business.
Studies on this subject must keep on going. Today we are not experiencing global warming but global freezing.

@ Daniel Aquilina
pull the other one Daniel.
Do you know how long is the Nationalist Governments bill on climate change?
ZERO WORDS because the Party is not for the environment.
It is only the Labour Party and to be fair, Alternattiva Demokratika that are keeping up a green message. Only them are championing their green credentials.

Many NGOs are saying that there should be a debate about global warming and climate change. But I tell you the debate is over and the reckoning has begun. The truth is staring us in the face. Climate change is here, in our country. It is an issue for our generation as well as future generations and those who deny it are the flat earthers of the 21st century
I say climate change is the greatest challenge facing the world today.
Every individual, every organisation, every government has a role to play. My advice to Government is to invlove and work together with schools, since there is a huge amount that we can do to involve students, help develop their awareness of the issue and develop a lifestyle that will help them meet the challenges they will face in the coming years!

Global warming is definitely happening, and the effect on the world could be “abrupt” or “irreversible” if action isn’t taken soon. The key finding of the final report by the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, prepared by top climate scientists from around the world, is that the “warming of the climate system is unequivocal”.The report says without a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in coming decades climate change will get worse.
Storms, sunshine and plenty of rain – climate change is here to stay. Now we have to face the challenges of limiting their effects and adapting to the changes. Climate change has become a serious consideration when planning new, major infrastructure projects and public buildings and when considering how to protect coastlines and design the sewage systems of the future. We have to accept that climate change will occur despite all efforts, so now we have to plan our way around it.Despite the continued uncertainty regarding the size and consequences of changes in the climate, we must focus on the present insights and scenarios. In the future we can expect more demands on our ability to verify how our infrastructure can cope with projected climate changes.

@Joseph Cauchi. Well done! You are spot on! Al Gore has manipulated data to distort the true situation. There are thousands of scientists the world over who know that it is all sham. And now we have local politicians jumping on the bandwagon!

This is the Labour Party that can win the hearts and minds of the people. Proactive, Positive, working for the many and not the few with drive and energy. Since being elected Leader of the PL, Joseph Muscat soon established a reputation as a determined reformer and firm leader, confronting established factions and contentious policy issues within the party. Almost immediately, the Party looks already more mainstream and fresh looking.
The Party must now continue working on policy and promote fresh and new candidates to make the Party look more mainstream, fresh and ready to enter into Government. Well done to Leo Brincat MP for putting climate change on the countrys agenda.
I do home that the forces of conservatism support this private members bill.

Pls NGO find something else for your passing time salaries that we are funding.
