Spanish airline Clickair will start flying between Valencia and Malta, the Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Mario de Marco said yesterday.

This follows Ryanair's recent decision to terminate its Valencia operations after a year.

Dr de Marco said Clickair will be flying to Valencia twice a week between July and September.

Easyjet and Ryanair last month confirmed interest in new routes offered by the government.

Easyjet is interested in operating a twice-weekly flight to and from Newcastle and Ryanair will run a twice-weekly flight to and from Bristol and other routes from the UK and Italy.

Malta Tourism Authority chairman Sam Mifsud said that attracting airlines to service the low-cost routes on offer had proven to be an uphill struggle, given the prevailing economic scenario.
