Education records
In a poor attempt to take political mileage from a difficult situation, Labour MP Evarist Bartolo tries to give readers the impression that the government does not have University students' interests at heart (Talking Point, January 6). This Administration has invested heavily in all levels of education and will continue to do so.
Does Mr Bartolo really think that people will forget that he was the Minister for Education when students' stipends were drastically reduced by the Labour government and that under a Labour government all students were forced to take out a loan in order to pursue their studies?
May I also remind him that under a Labour government there were a measly 800 students attending the University due to the numerus clausus imposed by that infamous regime. Under the Nationalist government the University population exploded and has now topped the 10,000 figure.

@ Anthony Cachia Castelletti: Well state about the amount that only during the PN Governmental administation had expanded to this level, and one cannot forget the first class of Lecturers that the University had engaged during this time too. One point was forgotten, and this is when students when they protested had been attached by tugs or mops or better classify them to have been a sort of bad or criminals coming most probably from the south area of Malta with the Police Force doing nothing. Have we forgotten those days? And when our schools where attached and had to close and take lessons in garages, have we forgotten these episodes?
In my final and honest opinion to these blob readers - just remember that "Once bitten, twice shy," so please be careful and the one you know, don't trust him?

@MuscatPat: Education during the MLP's (now PL) incumbency of the 70's and 80's was not a step above the sixties. It was a step downwards, I know, I was there. I came from a poor family of seven children, but still I made to Uni in 1970, Then in 1971 came Mr. Mintoff and the downward slide commenced, ending in a situation having ONLY about 800 student population at University and having disbanded the old MCAST, the two teachers colleges etc.
Steps, or Snakes and Ladders?

Mr Anthony Cachia Castelletti, my daughter was deprived from attending University too, same as those you mentioned in your letter. But this wasn’t 20 years ago, unfortunetaly it happen to be this year. With all the talking about education investment and records, she and others who wanted to study to become Nutritionist had no chioce but to find an alternative to pursue with their studies. And this alternative had cost me and my family thousands of Euros.

@ A.Cachia castelletti.
In the 60's under a Nationalist government only a few students could make it to university; only a few hundreds could afford it ,cause the salaries were four and a half pounds per week! Look at life as a stairway, one step at a time. Both PN and MLP contributed to education and both committed mistakes. Life is all about the grey areas and not simply the white or the black as you would like to mask it!
