Bills are daylight robbery (2)
Television news the other evening confirmed something that I've always maintained, that the Maltese are not wasteful and are very aware of the amount of water and electricity they use.
It was confirmed by a spokesman for Enemalta (TVM, 8 p.m. news, January 6) that the Maltese are the lowest consumers of water in the European Union, and that probably goes for electricity as well. Just goes to show that all this nonsense spouted about the need for us to use less of these commodities, and hence one of the reasons for raising prices is plain hogwash. We can't use less, even if we wanted to. What's more, single persons living alone are being penalised.

How to economise: Stop the importation of automatic washing machines, stop importation of electric cookers and all sorts of electronic equipment, including colour tv sets, stop the regular flow of water.... All I know is that 40 MILLION EURO were subscribed in just 2 hours!

"Any suggestions as to how I can further economize "
Here's afew.
Bath in cold water using a gallon bucket to wash and a gallon bucket to rinse.
Buy one of the old Primus cookers and purchase kerosene for it. They say they did marvels with them in the old days.
Ditch the washing machine. Do the laundry by hand and hang them around the rooms for a few days to dry. For pressing, put the clothes under the matress for a couple of days.
Switch the TV and computer off. Read the newspapers and for enjoyment, read a book.
For lighting, use candles. Once a month go to the movies.
In winter, use heavier clothing. For extra warmth, take up jogging.
After you have done all this, you should see a remarkable reduction in your water and electricity bill, also your gas bills.
Take public transportation. The money you save in petrol you can use for buying candles and kerosene.
Finally, you can pretend that you are back in the 40s and you will get a taste of how people used to live before we all became so affluent, without complaints. :-)

we are a couple in our 50's who have reitred here and rent a flat and we too am very conscious of electricity and water usage - but fail to see how we and most other people can reduce their usage and thus their bills - even the cost of the energy saver bulbs is a disincentive to buy as there so expensive to buy to start you off on the right footing. Gas is currently cheap but once the expected increase is in place what then???? Do we have to go back to living in caves to save the bills.

How is it that Xarabank is not holding a programme on these blessed water and electricity bills? Xarabank boasts itself of being a programme which discusses hot issues. I'm sure it will be a good one and that the number of viewers will be record high.

Living by the light from my TV set. Cooking takes up half an hour or so of my electric hob. Hot water heater lit for no more than an hour a day. Water in my bath no more than a height of six inches and sink to shave and wash in half filled. Water for my bath is used to flush the toilet.Heating by gas in one room only. Pc in use for around seven hours a day. Fridge on 24/7.Like Mr.Attard,I live alone and I am being unfairly penalised for it.
Any suggestions as to how I can further economize to save the horrendous unjust bills I am about to receive would be very welcome.
