English Premier League
Chelsea shatter Spurs' away record
Chelsea's Luiz Felipe Scolari.
This season, the Chelsea fans saw their team's magnificent home record of 86 successive matches in the league dented by Liverpool.
Chelsea lost 1-0 to their fellow title rivals at Stamford Bridge on October 26.
However, the Blues have managed to establish another record, this time on their travels. So, Chelsea now boast the longest victorious runs in the history of the Premier League, at home and away.
After the 2-0 triumph at Bolton, the Blues set a new record of 11 straight wins away from home. At the Reebok Stadium, Nicolas Anelka struck the 99th goal of his Premier League career to set Chelsea on their way to victory.
Chelsea's winning run away from home came to a halt in their next match at Everton which ended goalless. Nevertheless, Chelsea had succeeded in bettering Tottenham's sequence of 10 league wins away from home. That Spurs' milestone was set almost 50 years ago.
Both accomplishments spanned two seasons. Chelsea started their run at the end of the 2007/08 campaign and Tottenham's winning streak occurred in seasons 1959-60 and 1960-61.
Other statistics
Tottenham's record run started with a 3-1 win over Chelsea - who shattered their feat almost half a century later - through a hat-trick by Bobby Smith. The latter's was the only treble registered in both records.
Chelsea's winning run came to an end at Everton, while Tottenham were stopped by Sheffield Wednesday.
The scores aggregate gives one a clear picture of how football was played in the sizzling 1960s and now: Chelsea: Goals for 25; Against 1. Tottenham: Goals for 32; Against 11.
While Chelsea registered an amazing 10 clean sheets, Tottenham did not concede in only two games.
Tottenham went on to win their remaining away games in 1959-60 and finish two points behind Football League champions Burnley. In the season that followed, Tottenham did not falter and won the championship with an eight-point lead over Sheffield Wednesday. Spurs also won the FA Cup that season to become the first team to complete the double in that century.
Last season, Chelsea finished runners-up to Manchester United, two points behind. This season, under the Brazilian World Cup-winning coach Scolari, Chelsea are placed second and have a good chance of regaining the championship crown.
Arsenal's run
Arsenal hold the record for the best unbeaten away run in the Premier League. The Gunners went 23 matches without losing on the away front on two occasions:
August 18, 2001 to September 28, 2002: 23 matches (16 wins 7 draws).
April 5, 2003 to May 15, 2004: 23 games (13 wins 10 draws).
