About 16 members of the Graffitti movement this evening protested near the US Navy destroyer Barry (DDG-52), which has been in Grand Harbour since Sunday. The movement is against the presence of foreign warships.

The youths, watched by an equal number of policemen, carried a banner reading Warships Kill and showed pictures of children in war zones. They chanted a number of slogans including 'Killers go home'.

The protest coincided with a reception on board the vessel.

The Barry is here on a visit to mark the 100th anniversary of the “Great White Fleet,” a historic US Navy goodwill voyage around the world that included a stop in Malta in January 1909.

This naval voyage had demonstrated to the world the United States’ friendship and its commitment to enhancing multilateral relations.

“The Great White Fleet” reached the Mediterranean in December 1908 and offered invaluable assistance during the devastating earthquake which hit Messina at that time. Following its humanitarian mission in Messina, the fleet spent between January 14 and 19, 1909 in Malta.
