Gozo Channel passengers to travel free on Sunday

Last year was a record year for Gozo Channel which is this year celebrating its 30th anniversary with free passenger crossings next Sunday.

Finance Minister Tonio Fenech told a news conference this morning that the company operated 19,971 trips last year carrying 3.94 million passengers and 1.06 million cars.

The minister said that trips between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday will include live entertainment.

The fare price for vehicles will be as usual.

Dear Gozo Channel,

I do not think this is a real 'thank you' to your most regular customers - the Gozitan people who study or work in Malta during the week, go back to Gozo on Friday (always paying the fare at Cirkewwa), and come back to Malta on Sunday or Monday (no fare is paid going back from Gozo to Malta).

Or perhaps this was carefully planned?

Why not make every crossing free all week? I doubt if it is still worth the hassle to collect fares from passengers to and from our sister isle?

@R Abela,

I wouldn't bother going to Victoria on Sunday, there are scheduled power suspensions throught the centre of Victoria all day between 7.00am and 3.30pm.

I thought there was a catch in it somewhere, why not go all the way and as you say had a good bumber year which brings to mind Bumper* (Yes) what about all the vehicles from Malta also travel FREE*, now thats a good gesture to all the fateful travellers by Gozo ferry Both Maltese and foreigners. Awaiting reaction from readers.. Thanks

How generous and thoughtful of the Minister! What a day trip! Leave your car in Cirkewwa and travel to Mgarr for free! To do what? Any chance of a courtesy bus service between Mgarr and Victoria? If not, can we not have the entertainment set up in Mgarr rather than on board the ferry? Let's make an interesting day out of this special offer and help the Gozitan economy!
