Temporary ceasefire in Gaza
Israel put military operations in parts of the Gaza Strip on hold for a period expected to last three hours today, to enable aid to flow through a humanitarian corridor, officials said.
A Hamas commander said the group would not fire rockets during those hours.
Earlier, it was announced that Israel is holding talks with Egypt and Western powers over a proposal by Cairo for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Israeli officials described the plan as a "work in progress".
"There are ongoing contacts with the relevant parties as to the parameters of a sustainable quiet that must include the total cessation of all hostile fire from Gaza into Israel, and the complete ending of arms smuggling into the Gaza Strip," said Mark Regev, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's spokesman.
Another Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the Egyptian plan as "still a work in progress" and said negotiations were underway over the details.
Israel wants a specialised international force to search out and destroy tunnels along the border between Gaza and Egypt to prevent Hamas from rearming.

Hallelujah for three hours' respite. How brave the personnel involved in delivering the aid are... Let common sense prevail in forging some kind of agreement. This issues affects the entire Middle East, and world oil supplies, and so many other things - let alone that thousands of innocent people are now dead, injured or missing, homeless, without work, and so it goes on. Violence only ever breeds violence; when two tribes go to war, one is all that you can score. Let's all hope for a swift, workable solution as soon as possible.
