PL discusses Bill to amend rent laws
The Labour Party will be declaring its position on the Bill to amend the Rent Laws and making proposals when Parliament resumes this debate on January 12.
The party’s parliamentary group met to discuss its position on the Bill this morning.
It was presented with a report prepared by a commission, purposely set up by Labour leader Joseph Muscat.

The reform in the rent laws have been a pain in the back for the Nationalists' party from the very beginning since it was the first issue that showed the Labour Leader was already down to work. PL published its reactions and also pointed out what was missing in the Government's proposals, such as the absence of special rent system that would also protect gay marriages, unmarried couples, etc.
Labour also gave out its recommendations about shops and disagreed with the Government who by now is the only advisor from the whole lot who is still defending the privileges owned by clubs. That is surely not a good sign from the PN government especially when seeing such contributions by the usual ones!
But I understand these blue apologists. The main reason is that the PN media refused to give some coverage to what the Opposition is working on.
This was a strong move by Joseph Muscat. Setting up a committee in each area of discussion is a very good way forward.
Will the PN Gov under gonziPN (flimkien kollox possibli) will give back the houses turned into PN clubs too??
We want an answer to that too..if possible because as you say ; anything is possible ,no?
Will the PN do the same??
Here we go again....the new year 2009 started and the usual PN bloggers come out and criticise everything thePL does.
Grow up people, discussion is to be made in parlament and there the opposition is to be prepared and offer counter proposals were needed so as to have a proper rent law.
Will the PL under the new leader give back all those houses turned Labour party clubs which were stolen from the 'poplu'?
We WANT an answer
Kont hafna f'Malta sur cassar.... tant li naf li f'Malta qed jigri kollox kontra dak li twieghed qabel it-8 ta Marzu, u kollox kontra dak li qed jigri fid-dinja....
Ma nahsibx li kont Malta fl-ahhar xhur mela sur Sant!
@ Wistin Schembri
For your information , dear Sir ,I would like to tell you that upon the presentation of the White Paper , the PL under the leadership of Joseph Muscat set up a commitee such as to be in a position to present a professional argumentation when the law is to be discussed in Parliament .
This is the way a professional Movement should work Mr Schembri . If we want to move forward as a Nation it is not more acceptable to state ONLY if you are for or against , but be in a position to bring strong arguments to support your beliefs !! All this can be achieved by getting prepared beforehand and that is what the PL is rightly doing
The PL has been discussing and giving opinions / suggestions ever since Joe Muscat came along.
How about offering these tenant (a) Either new Government apartments at same rent so as not to suffer; or ....(b) Offer them a loan to build or buy their own new property; or offer them new Government apartments with some sort of easy re-payment system.
If this kind of offer is agreed to by the PL and the present Nationalist Government, so as to release property owners from those years of hardship through their grieve suffered this can be classified as an injustice and clear theft of their property when the war had finished year ago, cause these requestions was to be used in war time only. So it is about time as to do something wisely to property owners that suffered unjustified theft that was started by Labour and kept on by the Nationalist, until finally both parties agreed to remove this unjustified property rights.
MORE THAN 5MONTHS HAVE PASSED SINCE GOVERNMENT PRESENTED ITS PROPOSALS!
THIS LAID-BACK ATTITUDE BY THE LABOUR PARTY, SITTING ON THE FENCE AND TAKING AGES BEFORE COMING UP WITH IT'S SOLUTIONS AND PROPOSALS IS UNACCEPTABLE.
WITH ALL HIS DEFECTS LABOUR UNDER DR SANT USED TO BE MORE ON THE BALL AND PROCRASTINATION WAS NOT ON ITS BOOKS.
FOR GOD'S SAKE DR MUSCAT SHOULD REALIZE ONCE AND FOR ALL THAT HE IS NOW LEADING THE OPPOSITION AND THAT HE IS NOT THE LEADER OF SOME INSIGNIFICANT LOBBY GROUP.
LOADS OF ORGANIZATIONS HAVE ALREADY EXPRESSED THEIR REACTIONS AND COME UP WITH PROPOSALS ON THE RENT REFORM; EVERYONE EXCEPT THE MALTA LABOUR PARTY.
How about offering these tenant (a) Either new government apartments at same rent; (b) A loan to build or buy their own property; or offer them new apartments in an easy payment for property loan. Can the Labour introduce or suggest something that would satisfy property owners being a just rent payment? Can anyone suggest?
High time the Labour Party discusses something
rather than just come out with its usual knee-jerk reactions!
