Two treated for smoke inhalation
A mother and her teenage daughter started the New Year on a bad note when they had to be treated for smoke inhalation after the living room of their Mellieħa home was engulfed in flames, probably caused by a gas heater.
The incident took place at about midday yesterday when Civil Protection Department personnel were called to Great Siege Road to control a fire in a house. There, firemen quelled the flames that had spread to the curtains and other items.
The mother and her teenage daughter, who were trapped in the house, were rescued and treated for smoke inhalation by the paramedical crew of the ambulance that was also called on site.
The police are investigating.

Speaks volumes about the quality by simply having the EU mark on equipment!

Perhaps you should contact the appropriate Governmental Ministry and hand over the gas heater to make sure that this type of heaters doesn't have any manufacturing defects.
I would find it astonishing if the Civil Protection Department Personnel didn't confiscate the gas heater yesterday to investigate if it was a defective unit.

Two weeks ago we went through a similar experience. Luckily, we were near the gas heater when it started "flaming" and were able to turn it off in time.
It was a "cheap" heater we had just bought a few days before. Naturally, we did not use it again and am trying to get compensation from where we bought it. We have other gas heaters aroound the house, which we had for some years. They are all situated in "safe" areas, away from combustible materials such as curtains, furniture etc and we always close /put them off if we have to leave the house. So this is not a case of negligence or lack of precautions.
Perhaps the family in the article can get in touch with us to compare notes, name of heater etc. in case we have a similar 'brand name'.
