The parliamentarian Helena Dalli (PL) gave us a true but sad picture of what happens when those in office are found to be embezzling our money in some form or other.

The Auditor General finds out that our money was not spent as it should and some departments even refuse to comply with the Auditor's request to supply him with the information he requires to do his job professionally as is deemed necessary by his office.

This state of affairs is not acceptable in a civilised democratic country.

The solution lies in giving the Auditor General the duty and power to prosecute.

The alternative is to abolish such a totally impotent office. At least we would save the expense incurred in running such a costly but thoroughly impotent institution.

We even had a case where the Auditor General was threatened with an investigation because he made public the incorrect behaviour of an institution.

Can we stoop any lower in this so-called Christian country?
