Italy to start immediate deportation of migrants
Italy will send back illegal immigrants who arrive on its shores starting immediately, after an unexpected wave of arrivals around Christmas overwhelmed its holding centres for migrants, the interior minister said.
Thirty eight Egyptians were flown to Cairo yesterday, the first group to be deported under the new plan announced by Italy's right-wing government which has made cracking down on illegal immigration.
Interior Minister Roberto Maroni, a member of the anti-immigration Northern League, said Italy faced an emergency after some 2,000 immigrants arrived on the southern island of Lampedusa since Christmas.
"I have arranged for the activation of a centre suitable for identification and expulsion," Mr Maroni told Italian radio.
A mouthpiece for UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, said the move raised the risk of "generalised expulsions" and appealed to the government to respect the rights of immigrants.
"It is important, even in an emergency situation, to guarantee information on their rights and allow all those who express an interest in seeking asylum to be transferred as soon as possible to the appropriate centres," Laura Boldrini said.
Italy's long shoreline and proximity to Africa make it a popular entry point into Europe for thousands of desperate migrants who set sail in rickety, crowded boats each year, many perishing along the way.
The number of illegal migrants who have arrived on Italian shores nearly doubled in the first seven months of the year, prompting Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's government to declare a nationwide state of emergency in July.

Illegal immigration is causing too much harm to Europe; the rate of unemployment is on the rise not because of the credit crunch or recession but because of the cheap labor in rich countries. In Malta we seemed to be happy to turn a closed school into one room apartments where illegal immigrants can stay (and by the way, a Maltese like me has to take a house loan to afford a roof). And by the way from just the school building it seems that immigrants are now taking control of the whole area, with the No Go area as a public officer stated.
In other EU countries such as the UK - Europeans are living under continuous threat from terror attacks; bombings in the UK. In other european countries the name Christmas is being banished and replaced with Winter Holidays, the Cross removed from Schools ....and because the UK said something about the use of scarfs has nearly created a Chaos.
This is a message to the EU - WAKE UP!!!

"A mouthpiece for UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, said the move raised the risk of "generalised expulsions" and appealed to the government to respect the rights of immigrants."
This is the problem with UNHCR. The "R" stands for refugees but it is constantly overstepping its mandate by speaking on behalf of immigrants without distinguishing between legal andillegal immigrants.
We are all ready to respect the rights of genuine refugees, but if UNHCR tries to mulitply the problem x 100 by including immigrants of all stripes, then it overstretches its resources and its credibility.
