The Labour Party will be directing the people towards success in the coming year, Opposition leader Joseph Muscat said this evening in his message for the new year.

In 2008, Dr Muscat said, the Maltese and other peoples around the world took decisions and listened to promises.

“These promises have to be implemented in 2009,” he said.

In the new year, he said, the PL would be the bearer of optimism in the country.

“Our country always managed to overcome problems when it was filled with courage and when the people were united,” he said.

The PL expected the EU to work for an improvement in the standard of living of European families, including Maltese and Gozitans.

His party, Dr Muscat said, will be taking tough decisions saying no when it felt that the government was not acting in the best interests of the people and yes when the national interest so required.
