I understand it was a tradition that the President used to hand out baskets of oranges from the Orangerie at San Anton Gardens, to those in need. A pity this gesture has been discontinued. It would be a good PR exercise.

What is unforgivable is that the oranges remain on the trees, or rot on the ground. I spoke to some of the gardeners there last week. They told me no one is allowed to touch them, and even they are not permitted to take a few home. If they are not picked very soon the whole crop will be wasted.

I would like to know who is responsible for this insane decision. It is an affront to the Creator who gave us fruits to enjoy and to sustain us. To abandon this fruit when there are plenty of needy souls who could benefit is a gross insult and shows a callous disregard for the bounty of nature.

Own up somebody, and reverse this decision immediately! Perhaps the President would like to step in quickly and repair the damage done to the reputation of the state by this senseless waste.
