MUT gives government two weeks' ultimatum on supply workers
The Malta Union of Teachers is giving the government two weeks to rectify its position on "supply" workers, namely teachers, kindergarten assistants and learning support assistants.
In a statement the union said it was reserving the right to take any action it deemed fit to ensure justice with its members.
In a letter to the Education Minister, the union said that on October 31 it had declared an industrial dispute with the government on a number of issues, including this one.
Although two months had passed, little progress was registered. The union said it was insisting that workers in supply categories who had been in the job for four years should start getting increases according to their respective scales. This, it said, was in conformity with an EU directive on similar jobs.

@J Saliba
I have read the article and the people managing MUT know exactly what I mean. You have every reason to not get the full gest of my comments because you probably do not know the whole story.
@everyone
This is not a political issue. The fact of the matter is that in Malta we have a beaurocratic very inefficient education department. Let us not confuse the education department with the Ministry of Education. It's a case of everyone wanting to be on top but noone wanting to take responsibility for their position. Every Director points to each other and it is a viscious circle which unfortunately leads to these people not getting what is rightfully theirs. Ahh but they all want to be Directors and expect to be treated as the most important people on the island with their secretaries always facing the music because they are always in "meetings"
Well I hope we start to change this country and apply private sector practice. If it was up to me a few people would be looking for a new job because these things are unacceptable.

With all it's shortcomings the PN Governments has given the workers many rights. And workers in the Public Sector including teachers were given good salary increases. But one I must mention is that if a worker takes industrial action it is not penalised as was the case under LABOUR were after industrial action workers were transfered,locked out and other punishments. When UHM took industrial action under Labour of 96-98 it was sued in court for over a MILLION of old lira,which if UHM had not WON that case would have meant the DISBANDMENT of UHM.

Give us a break, the P.N govermant has been in power for 22 years,with all the things that where promised by this goverment before each election such things should not even be about in this country of JUST and DEMOCRACY.Flimkien kollox possible, before the election,but now back to reality.And the days that Malta stood still because labour where in power,its good to drag the past in as you do not have anything better to say,but there are two sides of the coin, so the majority of people voicing there thoughts according to you are anti democratic or Labour????please please,do you know the difference between PL.and PN??
PL always says what it will do before each election and stick by it as the PN promise heaven on earth and do everything nothing democracy for you.

I think that MUT is doing what it can for the workers and their families.
I understands but every strike hits. I remember when students held protests and strikes in 1996, which i supported. So please let freedom to strike and the freedom to join a union be a right that everyone should have.

@Igalea
How quick you are to condemn the government. where were you in 1984 during the teachers' lock out and after they got back to work?(probably not born yet) besides the mass transfers and beatings the teachers were ordered to sign a paper promising that they would never strike again. Ah for the good old democratic labour days.

@Shawn Bezzina
have u read the article? cause it explicitly states "Malta Union of Teachers is giving the government two weeks to rectify its position on "supply" workers, namely teachers, kindergarten assistants and learning support assistants." and LSAs, as u might want to appreciate, are mentioned. I don't remember the issues behind which MUT was in dispute with gov, back in the 80's, but those were dark times for education. Unfortunately this government is feeling that it can trumpet over teachers in the same manner. There is a lack of respect for this profession, starting from the top, no wonder the number of graduates is diminishing each year.

You should thank Gonzipn for disregarding workers rights.

............and as usual people like L.Bonnici expect the world to come to a standstill and the educators to accept anything this intransigent administration offers them even if ,as in this case, it is offering nothing!!! Workers have rights and the state has to grant those rights and if it doesn't then the workers have the right to use the "strike" tool in their favour!!
That's the way the cookie crumbles in a democratic, European country Ms.Bonnici!!!!!

@ L.Bonnicic
Yes unfortunately students are always the victims
The nationalist party in opposition in the eighties did not condem directives for teachers when we students ended up months without teachers. It us the govt then and now which is at fault and it is the right for every worker to fight and stand for his rights

the usual story..students are in the middle of the situation, pending, not knowing if they are going to have exams...very nice MUT - Malta the democratic country - what a joke!
The 'highest' institution of education abusing from the situation by holding the 'students as a hostage' ! well done. Making me more proud to be a Maltese student

And what about those 90 supply LSA's who graduated and have not yet been recognised as LSA 2?? Where are MUT on this??? How come they haven't yet voiced an opinion on this. Teacher's who graduated this year were recognised before the scholastic year started. The first term has finished and not a peep from MUT!!!!
MUT know about the situation because these people have been in contact with MUT but it seems that the MUT would not like to defend it's members on this issue. The fact that only 90 members are being effected does not warrant MUTs help.
On the other hand at least they have made a stance for Supply LSAs. Obviously this effects more than 1000 members so it would look good on them.
Thank you MUT for keeping ALL your members happy!!

And as usual, we students end up the victims of this industrial dispute! Thanks MUT & all the concerned parties!!
